Down south once again

The actual seperatist movement is very small. The former sultanate of Pattani was divided between Thailand and Malaysia, but these seperatists don't want union with Malaysia. They want an independent "mini-state" which they would rule under Sharia law. Presumably, the Thai minority would have to be expelled -- which would strip the "mini-state" of most of its educated inhabitants.

 

It seems the majority of the ethnic Malaysians there don't want that to happen. They just want to be left alone, which the government more or less was doing until Thaksin went in with an iron fist. But Thaksin stirred up a hornet's nest, and now foreign money is being sent in to keep things going ...
