junglesoup
i can t remember who said it, but I know I ve read it and heard it before. A farang said to me that anyone with their head screwed on and some drive could become wealthy in bangkok. i think anyone can become wealthy if they want with these credentials. I ve also read it somewhere. Do you think there are many stones uncovered in Bangkok, where opportunity fortunes the bold? Is Bangkok a place to dream, or is it just a place to only dream? To me it seems like juxtoposition between people who succeed and people who get fucked up and end up alcoholics and misfits... Your thoughts... I think Jim Thompson kind of set the standard for that kind of dream. But those days are long gone. I only know of a very few farang who are making serious money in Thailand. liquidflux
Have to agree with mr chukwoww There's very few jobs these days which Thais can't do themselves, for much less than a farang.
ChristianTroy
Have to agree with mr chukwoww There's very few jobs these days which Thais can't do themselves, for much less than a farang. I have to disagree with you both and I also agree with you both! It depends on your status/point of view/your guts. If you go to Thailand to be an employee you won't get wealthy! If you go to Thailand to employ people you can be wealthy if you do the right things! Nobody gets wealthy if he doesn't invest or risk something, maybe everything! Maybe not in BKK but in other cities such as Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui etc... the money is literally out on the street, go pick it up! As farangs we have such a big advantage because our countries are way more developed than Thailand, they follow exactly the farang path in terms of modernisation. 3 Weeks ago I was on a seminar with my lawyer, it was about economics and opportunities for investors and start up companies. According to their study, the cities listed above are about 6 years behind than an average european city, it is very easy to predict what will be needed next. It is like having a time machine, stealing the recipe of Coca Cola and go further back in time and do it by yourself. Invest into the develoment or find investors yourself and do it! I was never employed in my entire life, was always a freelancer and later raised my own companies. Now I am resident for 9 months in Thailand and openend 2 Companies, on christmas I open my first A Gogo Bar 70% payed by the money from the other 2 businesses and 30% from my savings! I am just 34! Probably sounds like bragging to some people, it isn't meant like that. I am just trying to say: If you have and idea or a concept and you believe 100% in it and you analyse the market and if this study gives you a good feedback "go for it" Get a lawyer who hooks you up with a Thai who gives you his name to found the company. Get Investors (friends) give the a nice interest and show them your business plan. When you really believe in what you are trying to do, you will convince the people to get a loan/investment. If you are not the guy who wants to stand on his own feet, then stick with what you are doing right now! Thailand is packed with amazing opportunities, so many things are needed but not available. Just think about it!
chuckwoww
I think you are one of the few. Course it also depends on what OP means by wealthy.
junglesoup
Congratulations CT. Good to see your doing well. What got me thinking about this was that I was reading the thread about the Kangaroobar on soi 22 which is opening. I got the impression that it will be a success because the guy is putting in the effort.Taking care of the customers needs etc. Personally I agree with you CT. I ve spotted many little niche markets in Bangkok that could be exploited. Theres certainly a lack of quality good expat pub restaurants, where you can get excellent food.I mean traditional "home" food. I mean you can get ok food, but its not excellent. chris
junglesoup
Wealthy, hmmm. I guess that a subjective thing. My idea of money is not having money but whether or not it provides the means to live up to my ideals/values. ie, i like my own independence, so work that makes me my own boss, where i decide to work, and when. Money to travel as often as i like. decent condo and enough to support family if i ll have any and to maybe invest in a worthwhile cause. SHIT, i feel like i m being over idealistic. ah well... chuckwoww
I guess I misunderstood what you meant by wealthy. Sure you can make a living in Thailand. Lots of foreigners do. Import/export is still good, real estate if you have the right Thai partners, restaurants maybe if you have some capital and experience. Bars? I've had a couple. Never made any real money but it was fun for a while. Websites seem to be a bit of a mess at the moment but they had their day. Porn is always a possibility if you understand the business. ChristianTroy
I think you are one of the few. Course it also depends on what OP means by wealthy. Let's define it everybody For me wealthy means when you are able to put at least 2/3 of your income on a savings account.
