PARTICIPANTS in the annual Nude Olympics are being urged to use plenty of sunscreen today as the mercury in Adelaide heads for 40C.

The annual event attracts about 1000 competitors and spectators to Maslins Beach in the city's south for events such as the fun run and three-legged race.

It was cancelled a fortnight ago due to torrential rain and high tides.

â??Everyone's welcome to either come and watch or participate,â? a Southern United Naturists spokesman told ABC Radio today.

â??If you are coming down we do encourage that you put on plenty of sun screen and obviously put on a hat.â?Â

The temperature in Adelaide has already hit 36C as the city heads for a maximum forecast of 40C.

According to the weather bureau, the temperature has already hit 38C at Parafield in Adelaide's northern suburbs and Snowtown further north, and it's already 40C at Ceduna on the state's west coast.

A total fire ban is in place in the Flinders, west coast and eastern Eyre Peninsula areas of the state.
