Baby left on doorstep survives frigid Canada wind

A newborn wrapped in blankets and abandoned on an elderly couple's frigid doorstep in Saskatoon in Canada's windy plains over the weekend was warm and well in hospital, police told AFP.

The baby girl was found outside the couple's front door around 10:00 am Saturday when one of them, a retired construction worker, went out to start his car in frigid temperatures, said Saskatoon Police Service spokeswoman Alyson Edwards.

The infant, weighing only 3.2 kilograms (seven pounds), was likely left there a half hour to a few hours earlier, she said.

"It was very cold that day, below minus 25 degrees Celsius (minus 13 degrees Fahrenheit). The child wouldn't have survived much longer in those temperatures," Edwards said. "It was a close call."

Police canvassed the neighborhood and tried to track the mother using dogs, believing she might have been in distress, to no avail.

Saskatoon is located in central Saskatchewan province, in Canada's central plains.

On Monday, they made a public plea to the mother to come forward and explain to police why she walked away from her child. No criminal charges were being considered at this point, Edwards said.

"We believe we're dealing with a young mother. Other people may not have been aware that she was pregnant and when she gave birth, she was probably scared and confused and felt she had to abandon the baby," she said.

The baby girl meanwhile is in stable condition in hospital, but if nobody claims her, she will likely be put up for adoption, she said.
