Residents rally at Suvarnabhumi airport, demand compensation

BANGKOK, May 12 (TNA) - About 1,000 people affected by aircraft noise at Suvarnabhumi international airport Saturday staged a rally at the passenger terminal and demanded to see Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont as well as speedy compensation paid by the Airports of Thailand (AoT).

Dressed in black, the protestors converged about noon and later blocked the road leading to the departure terminal, causing chaos among passengers and a localised traffic jam.

Senior AoT executives earlier urged the protestors to move their rally to a maintenance building but they refused and demanded a meeting with the prime minister.

Protestor Prachob Muang-in said the group wanted Gen. Surayud to order AoT to agree to purchase the homes of over 3,000 residents wishing to leave the area within 15 days, and to compensate those wishing to sell houses as well as to those wanting to repair their homes by the end of July.

The protestors also called on AoT to annul its decision regarding compensation made on May 9 as they charged that there was a mistake in the appraisal prices of 71 homes. They wanted AOT to apply a regulation it made on March 20 this year in appraising prices of the houses as they thought it was fairer to house owners.

Suvarnabhumi Airport director Serirat Prasutanond met the protestors and told them that he had informed the prime minister that they wished to meet him.

Mr. Serirat said a working committee will be set up to consider the protestors' demands. Proposals will be submitted to the AoT board for consideration next Thursday.
