Countdown to first Muay Thai away event

Los Angeles _ The fighters for tomorrow's big WBC Muay Thai tournament in Los Angeles came face to face for the first time on Wednesday during a press conference at the Normandie Casino. However, there were two notable omissions with WBC middleweight champion Lamsongkram Chuwattana and WBC super-featherweight champion Kaew Fairtex both set to arrive later in the evening due to visa problems.

Despite star attraction Lamsongkram not being present, the event attracted a large number of American print and TV journalists.

WBC Muay Thai media director Patrick Cusick said he was expecting the tournament to be a huge success.

"This is the chance to show the culture of Muay Thai and Los Angeles has embraced this event," said Cusick.

"The Thai community in southern California has really got behind this and helped to spread the word."

Principal sponsor Singha Beer have helped bring the idea to fruition and representative Charlie Chaicharee said he was proud that his company was helping to boost Thailand's image in the USA.

"Muay Thai is our heritage and our national sport and it is an honour to get involved," he said.

Dutch heavyweight Ricardo van den Boss and American rival Rocky Rosario came face to face for the first time. Both said they were confident of victory in their WBC heavyweight title clash, which will be the first fight to be shown live on Channel 5 in Thailand on Sunday morning.
