Ckrisg
Amsterdam has unveiled plans for a major cleanup of its ancient city centre, including shutting up to half of its famed brothels and marijuana cafes. The city says it wants to thwart organised crime, and it is targeting businesses that "generate criminality" including prostitution, gambling parlours, "smart shops" which sell herbal treatments, head shops and "coffee shops" where marijuana is sold openly. The city already had plans to close many brothels and said previously it might close some coffee shops, but the plans announced Saturday go much further. The city says it plans to spend up to £35 million to bring hotels, restaurants, cultural organisations and boutiques to the area. http://news.uk.msn.com/Article.aspx?cp-documentid=11640430 Increase tourism or kill the golden Goose??? cavanami
Last time I was there, it was a HUGE tourist draw! I was with local, Dutch friends and we had a great time, people watching! They said the mafia moved in, made it safe for everyone and it has been a tourist attraction for many years now! Maybe Hamburg goes next?
kamui
I am surprised as well, since I think too that the red light district is a main tourist attraction.
