tips for a long stay in BKK

thought i'd share a few tips for anyone who is coming to thailand to stay a long time that i've picked up on:

-regular sky train user?

instead of dealing with coin each time, go the counter and a prepaid card. you can replenish it with as much baht as you want when it gets low.

-paying bills?

you can pay phone, electric, ubc, and other bills at 7/11. some are free and some have a 10 baht surcharge.

-need some software or computer hardware?

pantip plaza should have everything you need, though it could be overwhelming due to the size. as you walk out turn right and walk between 1-2 blocks for a nice spread of cheap seafood too.

-looking for a place between a hotel and an apartment?

check out serviced apartments. usually more luxury and space than a hotel at much lower costs. you get a kitchen too and some have in room broadband.

-need dial up internet access?

an easy way is to go to pantip, stores that sell music cd's, or the like and look for internet packages. you buy one of these and inside is a username and password that works for a certain amount of hours or time.

-shopping for something?

if you want high end, go to world trace center or emporium. good stuff at mbk too. all these places are big, but somewhat pricy. If you want cheaper, try Makro. If you want a price a thai would be proud of, ask your favorite BG to bring you shopping.

-need money?

use ATMs if $500 a day will do. better than managing a stack of bills or travelers checques and you get better exchange rates.
