Guest
Just some update on my recent travel and daily rice (bread). This trip - again I had quite a number of somtam from the streets. 30B each. One time, it came with crab claws - didn't really fancy that. So went on to learn that to have a som tam without crab, say "som tam mai phuu". (phuu = crab) Pad Thai was also on top of my list. Mostly at the north Patong (Sawatdirak) food centre beside the beach. 40-50B. The weather was sweltering (rorn) hot. "Rorn phen bah". (Hot like mad). Due to that fact, I often find myself stopping the mobile vendor getting mainly a papaya (malakor) or watermelon (taeng moh). A few Spy bought from the supermaket (ocean and the one beside christins) - cost just 27-29B - compared to drinks at the disco 80B. Next trip - hope to get the McSomtam. Didn't notice that - as I never did step into McD in Thailand!
Brink15
Sounds like you had quite the time. As for som tam w/o crab, it would be "Som tam mai sai bpoo" or som tam don't put crab. My order goes: "som tam mai sai bpoo, mai sai goong heng, mai sai balaa, sai dair nam plaa yang-deeo."
Guest
But is it really som tam after your order ? I mean , what is left, papaya with naam plaa..
Brink15
Actually green papaya w/ lime, lots of prik kee-noo, peanuts, and nam plaa. But yeah Thais consider it pretty boring. Just don't dig those strong fishy flavors.
daeng bireley
What about "som tam thai" thats the central thai version not as hot and doesnt have crab or plaa raa.
Brink15
Leave out the goong heng and add some prik kee-noo and I'm there.
Guest
HI Brink, Yes - something similar to your order. Crushed peanuts are a must! Gee - thanks if you have read my new reply on my post about "cost of living in PhuketTown/Patong". Reckon eating som tam is really healthy and keeps the cost down if we're just down to 10 000B to 15 000B budget a month.
