A British tourist at the Oktoberfest beer festival has died after falling from a sixth-floor hotel window ledge while relieving himself.

Dockyard worker, Richard Orchard, had been attending the famous German beer festival in Munich with friends.

The 25-year-old became separated from his friends and wandered back to his hotel.

It is believed Mr Orchard was so drunk he was unable to find his room and desperate to go to the toilet he climbed onto a hotel window ledge when he lost his balance.

Mr Orchard was later found in a courtyard 70ft below.

Police spokesman Christoph Reichenbach told the Sun: 'The man had been visiting the Oktoberfest with work colleagues.

'He returned to the hotel not far from the celebrations alone at around 4am.

'All the indications are that he was very drunk. We believe he was trying to find his way back to his room and he lost his way.

'In order to relieve himself he'd opened a window and climbed onto the ledge.'

Friends of Mr Orchard, from Plymouth, Devon insist he was not suicidal or depressed.

Mr Orchard, whose family live in Yelverton, Devon, was a former pupil at Devonport High School for boys where he was remembered as a 'popular and smiley' young man.

Friends said: 'He was such a lovely guy. He was a real gentleman.'

Police are investigating to find out if he was drunk when the accident happened.
