Yellow Shirts: Oppose charter change

The People's Alliance for Democracy [color:yellow](PAD)[/color] on Friday issued a statement reaffirming its opposition to the ongoing effort by some government MPs to amend the constitution and called for public support for its stand.

The statement said politicians who were banned from politics by the Constitution Court following the dissolution of their parties were pushing for amendments to Sections 93, 94, 95, 98, 103 and 109 concerning the electoral system and Section 190 which requires prior parliamentary approval for international agreements.

The PAD said the 2007 constitution, approved by 14.7 million people at a referendum, should not be amended for the sole purpose of fulfilling the interests of politicians while the country is still plagued with corruption.

The statement calls for Thai people all over the country, especially the 14.7 million who voted for the 2007 constitution, to come out in full opposition to the ongoing efforts to amend it.

PAD calls on Democrt to be minority govt rather than supporting charter amendments

The People's Alliance for Democracy Friday vowed to protest against charter amendments and called on the coalition-leader Democrat Party not to support the amendments.

The PAD co-leaders announced their stand against the amendments at the head office of ASTV of PAD co-leader Sondhi Limthongkul.

Chamlong Srimuang, a PAD co-leader, said the Democrat should not worry about a pullout threat by coalition partners if it declined to support the amendments because the Democrat could go on working as the government of House minority.

Pipop Thongchai, another PAD co-leader, said there will be a major political change in a few months so the Democrat should hang on and should give in to the pressure of the coalition partners for it to support the amendments.

Chamlong said the PAD would do all it could to oppose the amendments.
