Mentors
BANGKOK - THAI anti-government protesters have released a group of soldiers taken hostage in Bangkok during deadly weekend clashes in the capital, a police spokesman said on Monday. Police Major General Vichai Sangprapai said he had personally won the men's release on Sunday. 'I secured the release of all four soldiers at the Phan Fa bridge rally,' Maj-Gen. Vichai told AFP. 'They said they had got lost in the crowd of Red Shirts during the chaos, and the Red Shirts did not trust the soldiers so they detained them behind the stage,' he said. Initially seven soldiers had been detained, but three escaped by themselves on Saturday night, Maj-Gen. Vichai added. Saturday's street battles in Bangkok's historic quarter led to the deaths of 17 civilians and four soldiers, with more than 800 people injured - the country's bloodiest political unrest in almost two decades.
