Gunfire has been heard in the Thai capital Bangkok hours after a deadline for thousands of protesters to clear a camp expired.

It was not clear where the firing was coming from or if anyone was hurt.

Earlier, a BBC reporter saw trucks unloading heavily-armed soldiers several blocks from the encampment.

The military had given a deadline of 1800 (1100 GMT) for people to leave the area. Shops and businesses were urged to close and transport suspended.

The protesters, known as the red-shirts, want Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve parliament and call fresh elections.

The BBC's Rachel Harvey in Bangkok says a column of about 200 soldiers had been seen moving towards the camp.

There was a short volley of gunfire and reports of an explosion, she said.

Street lights have been switched off in the camp, plunging it into darkness, but protesters continue to defiantly blast out music, our correspondent says.
