There are several possibilities.

At the northern part of Kata Noi beach you will find the small island of Koh Pu. In this area are some decent corals and plenty of fish and the water depth does not exceed some 4-5 metres.

Even i Patong Bay are a couple of good spots. They are both in the southern end. If you go by motorbike you take the beach road all the way down to the southern end cross the bridge and turn left up the mountain. This used to be a dirt track very slippery during rainy season but it should have been fully paved by now by the burmese workers. You follow this road until you reach the Traitrat Beach. It is easy recognizable due to the elefant camp. There are even some bungalows for rent here and a restaurant. This used to be the most quiet place in the Patong Bay only receiving a handful of visitors per day.

You should time you visit so that you arrive during high tide as you will have to swim some hundred metres or so over a very shallow area close to shore. Once out here you will see an abundance of both fish and coral. And you will most likely have it all to yourself. Great spot.

From the Traitrat beach you could negotiate the rock of the cape just west of here and from there come to the Paradise Beach which also offers good snorkelling. The only other way of going there is hiring a longtail from Patong.

I`ve been fishing and snorkelling along the shore between Patong and Karon and there are some rather good spots as well. However, don`t go there when the surf is high as the visibility in the water will be poor and it can get rather dangerous. The rocks are all covered with mollucks and they are extremely sharp you will be well adviced to bring "strap-tight" sandals (don`t know the correct term) also when snorkelling so that you don`t cut your feet when getting out of the water.

There are lots of fish and schools of squid among these rock and considerably larger than you will see in either of the 2 other places.

The price? If you have mask and snorkel and your own means of transportation well, then it is for free.

Have fun
