Job in BKK: Should I tell them I'm here?

I've been living in LOS for eight months, waiting (and waiting...) for the US job market to improve. I'm considering applying for a job with an American company, for a job in BKK.

Question: is telling them that I am here a good idea or a bad idea?

Pro: I'm here, I can get to an interview in an hour, I'm familiar with Thai culture, no big relocation costs for them.

Con: They may think I'm a BG-chasing pervert (true).

I'm no expert here, but am pretty sure being in thai & applying for a job in thai is a definite advantage.

another thread mentions going out & meeting the 'right' people at the 'right' places in bkk is the key to a job. qualifications are 2nd...

I might try it soon if I can't get relocated???

I would just initiate contact via e-mail or telephone, and let the employer guide the activity in relation to the "bricks and mortar world". Where you are communicating from doesn't usually come up, unless the situation unfolds where employer must initiate phone call to you.

If they indicate a need for you to be interviewed in BKK, you simply agree. If they want to see you overseas.....well, now you have a problem!

Good luck.

I am not sure whether the international education market is unique in this respect but if it is not, then there is at least one very good reason for not letting them know you are there, or even being interviewed in Bangkok, if you can avoid it.

I guess budgets are tighter in schools but there is a general policy that if you are interviewed in Thailand you will be offered a local hire contract. If you fly to a recruitment fair and successfully interview for the same job you will get an overseas hire contract. In Thailand, that doesn't seem to make much difference salary wise (though I have heard VERY different stories of other countries) but it would probably mean that you got a) much lower housing benefits B) no annual/end of contract flights and c) different pension benefits.

Thought it might be worth mentioning but it may be irrelevant.

I would lie.

Rightly or wrongly (often rightly!) a single bloke staying in Thailand is regarded as their for the obvious reasons.

I suggest saying you are in Singapore or KL (the most normal / reputable places in SEA) - possibly with freinds / family and maybe also doing some private business (just to show you are not "wasting" your time on holiday and that you are not desperate for a job) and that you can and are willing to get to BKK very quickly.

(Maybe say that you are coming to BKK very soon anyway as your American girlfreind / mother is flying into BKK as it was the cheapest / only flight they could get and you were going to escort them down to KL / Sing - this may prompt them either to hurry up an interview or give you a "valid" reason to "just pop in and see them" whilst you are already in BKK.

I wouldn't take your passport to the interview though! and keep your fingers crossed they don't want to meet your mother! (- although how much can it cost to hire a Farang old lady for a few hours in BKK?)

Don't know which industry you are in, but for IT most of APAC headquarters are in Singapore.

I work for one of big multinationals, all hire/fire efforts are done by the Singapore based guys. Even hiring local programmers in BKK.

As I said in another post, I found there is queue of boys' club members waiting for oportunities in BKK to present themselves. Somebody who is already "on the floor" won't be given a glance. I am talking expat positions/money here.

Anyway, the guy who employed me a few years back is now responsible for BKK, told me the first oportunity is mine if I wanted it. He has been receiving inquires and CVs from all around the world, from the people from within the company. Electronic copies get deleted, hard copies shreded.

Wish you find your industry shell easier to break into.

The company is a big IT shop. I figured that tenured insiders would get the first shot at BKK jobs, so I found it odd that they posted BKK job openings on their website. I figured they'd post it on their intranet first (if that, even) and get 1000 applicants.

Just to clarify - those CVs being received are not in response to any internal nor external job advertisment.

They are all "please register my interest if something comes up" kind of thing.
