Abhisit denies US pressured govt in Bout extradition

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is insisting his government was not subject to pressure from Washington to extradite suspected Russian arms smuggler Viktor Bout.

[color:red]WikiLeaks claims Mr Abhisit was sent a secret diplomatic memo from the US embassy in Bangkok concerning Mr Bout's case.

It said the document came from US ambassador to Thailand Eric John on Aug 13, 2009 - two days after the Criminal Court rejected a US request to extradite Mr Bout.

The five-page memo contained a summary, updates and analysis of the case, steps planned by the embassy's "Bout team" to help the US in its appeal against the court's ruling, and the embassy's suggestions on what Washington should do in the case.

"We would encourage the Thai government to issue a public statement expressing disappointment in the judges' decision, its intention to win on appeal, and a reiteration of Thailand's commitment to both the struggle against international terrorism and to its extensive law enforcement relationship with the United States," the memo said.

[color:red]The ambassador also noted that there were significant indications that "the Russians were trying to use bribes to influence the outcome of the [bout] case".

Mr Abhisit yesterday said the leaked classified documents had nothing to do with the Thai government.

Acting government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said the Thai and US governments would deny the authenticity of the documents on Viktor Bout released by WikiLeaks.

The government would respond to the documents officially if they affected Thailand's relationship with other countries, Mr Panitan said.

He said Mr John would call on the prime minister today to take his official leave now that his tenure in Thailand has ended.

Deputy spokesman for foreign affairs Thani Thongphakdi said his ministry would examine the credibility and accuracy of the WikiLeaks report.

"However, the ministry could confirm that [the Bout case] was carried out in due legal process without interference or pressure from any side," Mr Thani said.

"For us, the case is over."

The spokeshuman for the US embassy in Bangkok, Walter Braunohler, said yesterday the US strongly condemned the illegal disclosure of classified information.

"It puts people's lives in danger and undermines our efforts to work with other countries to solve shared problems," he said.

"While we cannot comment on allegedly classified information, we can talk about the role US diplomats play in Thailand and elsewhere. It is the responsibility of diplomats everywhere to interact with governments, civil society, to analyse events, and report to Washington as part of the formulation and execution of the foreign policy of the US."
