Four hurt in Pattani bombing

A roadside bomb wounded four people in Pattani's Yarang district on Monday afternoon, police said.

The bomb went off when a car carrying a village headman and three security volunteers was passing by. After the explosion, a group of gunmen opened fire at the car and then fled.

The four victims -- village headman Ismaair Buenae and the security volunteers Arsae Buenae, Muhammad Rohsuedi and Muhammad Saedi -- were rushed to Yarang hospital.

Police blamed separatist militants.

More than 5,000 people have been killed and over 8,400 hurt in the three southern border provinces and the four districts of Songkhla since violence erupted in January 2004, according to Deep South Watch -- an agency that monitors the conflict in the far South.
