OK, its a golden rule that you simply don't drink the water from the tap in any SE Asian country, but how many of us have found ourselves cleaning our teeth from the tap without thinking ? I dont see things getting any better for the citizens of this megacity anytime soon, regardless of how 'rosy' their economy might be atm, I still see Jakarta as a fantastic nightlife destination, but I couldn't live there.

Hoards of illegal miners are trying to cash in on a gold rush in Indonesia. They use toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide to extract the gold from rocks and the run off ends up in rivers, one of which supplies some of Jakarta's water. Yesterday police clashed with illegal miners in Maluku in the country's west but in East Java thousands more are going about their business.
