CHUMPHON - Highway Police on Wednesday morning arrested a drug dealer and seized 1.3 million methamphetamine pills, or yaba, with an estimated street value of 390 million baht.

Highway Police chief Pongsit Sangphet said a speeding pickup truck with a Por Mor 45 Chiang Mai (ผม 45 เชียงใหม่) licence plate was stopped at a checkpoint on Phetkasem Road in Chumphon's Muang district.

In the back of the vehicle, officers found the drugs hidden in 12 backpacks under 12 plastic crates of vegetables.

Police said Ong-art Chengya, the driver, tried to bribe the police at the checkpoint with 200 baht to let him off but they refused. He then offered to pay 2,000 baht, but they still refused. :rotl:

Ong-art Chengya, the driver, later confessed that a vegetable seller at Srimuang fresh market in Ratchaburi province hired him to deliver the speed pills to a major drug agent in the southern province of Phuket, paying him 20,000 baht, according to police.

The suspect is a 39-year-old Hmong tribesman from northern Thailand.

He was taken to Bangkok for further questioning.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, who oversees security, said the confiscated drugs were produced in Myanmar.

"I don't think this batch of yaba was to be sold in Phuket [as claimed by the suspect] because crystal methamphetamine and cocaine are more popular there," Mr Chalerm said. :dunno:

He said he would go to Chiang Rai province on Thursday to meet local village chiefs and discuss ways to tackle drug problems.
