Novelist and National Artist ML Srifa Mahawan, better known by her pen name "Srifa Ladawan", died on Tuesday from lung cancer at the age of 83.

ML Srifa's popular novels include Khao Nok Na (Rice Outside the Paddy), which contrasts the different lives of a European-Thai girl and an African-American Thai girl, and Prasart Mued (Dark Castle), a mystery story about a noble family.

She went by many pen names, including "Chunlada Phakdiphumin","Srifa Ladawan" and "Seefa", using them to write novels depicting social ills.

They include Wongwian Chiwit (Circle of Lives), Thammai (Why) and Khao Nok Na, which was made into a TV series and translated into Japanese.

ML Srifa married businessman Bunthat Mahawan in 1961.

She started writing when she was in high school and was declared a National Artist in 1996.

Her bathing rite will be held Thursday at 4pm at Wat Debsirin.
