Chinese leaders have reportedly banned the discussion of seven subjects in university classrooms as they attempt to “curb Western influence,†the Chronicle reported Monday. Zhang Xuezhong, a prominent Chinese law professor, revealed on his website that the Chinese government has dictated a new policy on university professors, telling them they cannot teach seven subjects. Xeuzhong, a professor at East China University of Political Science and Law, stated the “seven speak-nots†are universal values, citizen rights, civil society, judicial independence, freedom of the press, the privileged capitalist class, and past mistakes of the communist party.

Xeuzhong’s website has since been deleted and the term “seven speak-nots†has been blocked on social media in China. Most of the discussions of the seven banned topics have been “deleted†in China, in fact, the seven banned topics have been incorporated into a policy for censorship of public opinion online. One website managed to resurrected some of the censored social media posts, many discussing the fact that, although the Chinese government tries to censor the internet, many people know how to gain unfettered access to the web.

Chinese professors and analysts stated this recent directive from Beijing to universities illustrate an awareness among Chinese leaders that the government is losing its “ideological grip†over younger faculty and students. Opponents of this latest censorship state they can "see the fear in the heart of the Communist Party leaders".
