Yingluck calls for equal treatment

Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Monday reiterated that she and her government will not support any separation of Thailand.

However, she called on the army to avoid double standards in probing wrongdoing by all and any groups in relation to partition matters.

"An investigation is needed if there is a real separatist movement. I welcome the army's investment in this matter but the most important thing is to give equal justice to all parties," she said.

The army has filed a police complaint against Petcharawat Wattanapongsirikul, a core member of the Rak Chiang Mai 51 group, alleging separatism and treason under Sections 113 and 114 of the Criminal Code.

Sedition charges filed against Chiang Mai red shirt leader

The army on Monday filed sedition charges against a hardcore red shirt leader of Chiang Mai province for allegedly advocated partition.

On behalf of the army, Col. Phoka Jorkloy, intelligence chief of army circle 53, Chiang Mai, and Staff Judge Advocate Lt Col Sundote Dongparee filed the complaint against Petchawat Wattanapongsirikul, of the "Rak Chiang Mai 51" group with Chiang Mai's Mae Ping police station.

The complainants accused Petchawat of supporting secession and related activities in violation of Articles 113 and 114 of the Criminal Code.

Article 113 (3) of the Criminal Code stipulates that partitioning the country, through use of force or through announcing plans to do this, is regarded of an act of secession. The crime carries a life term or death sentence.

Article 114 states that the preparation and collection of arms for partition and for conspiracy to partition the country can result in a prison term of three to five years. Encouraging people to be involved in secessionist activities, or concealing acts that lead to sedition, is punishable with a three to five-year prison term.

Army says it is necessary to take action against Sor Por Por Lanna

The Army has found it necessary to take legal actions against the people suspected of inciting secession and plotting to illegally set up an army, Colonel Winthai Suvaree, deputy spokesman of the army, said today (Monday).

He pointed out that the activities of the so-called Sor Por Por Lanna in openly advocating secession and in mobilizing an armed force were deemed a security threat in violation of articles 113 and 114 of the Criminal Code.

Despite the group’s unlawful activities, he noted that not a single governmental agency bothered to deal with them, hence the army had to step in to take the necessary legal actions.

Colonel Winthai insisted that the army did not discriminate against or adopt a double standard practice against the red-shirt followers.

Regarding the protests and alleged sedition activities of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee, the deputy spokesman said that the government had already taken action to deal with them through the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order and, therefore, it was unnecessary for the army to step in.

He urged all parties in the conflict to follow the rules and respect the law of the land.
