Thailand: Military Move is Not a Coup

May 20, 2014 (Tony Cartalucci - ATN) - The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has announced that it is taking over responsibility for national security from the current regime's so-called "Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order" (CAPO). The move came after nearly six months of terrorism carried out by pro-regime militants the regime itself has failed categorically to either condemn or counter with its sweeping, self-granted security powers. As recently as last Thursday, an M79 grenade attack on anti-regime protesters left 3 dead and many more maimed, including an elderly woman who lost her eye.

Additionally, stockpiles of weapons have been stumbled across by police, who in fact are loyal to the current regime. This indicates that so many weapons have been brought into Bangkok or readied elsewhere by the regime to carry out a concerted terrorist campaign, that their own police are stumbling over them by accident while on routine calls.

My initial thoughts on the use of Martial Law:

1) Any action that adheres to the Constitution and the Rule of Law to prevent losses of lives and restore peace and stability deserves cooperation and support;

2) Power under Martial Law should only be exercised as necessary to maintain peace and order. It should not be used to curb fundamental rights for political ends;

3) The use of Martial Law may be able to restore order temporarily, but sustained stability requires a political solution. Security officials cannot achieve this on their own. It is the duty and responsibility of all stakeholders to continue their efforts to reach such a solution.

Tomorrow the Democrat Party will hold a meeting of the Executive Committee to discuss the current situation.

"The baht dropped the most in two months as the army imposed martial law nationwide. It weakened as much as 0.6 per cent yesterday, the biggest intra-day loss since March 20, before trading 0.3 per cent lower on the day at 32.56 per dollar as of 8.45am in Bangkok, according to data compiled by Bloomberg."

NBTC shuts down 3,000 radio stations

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/politics/NBTC-shuts-down-3000-radio-stations-30234144.html

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has shut down 3,000 unlicensed community radio stations in line with the martial law yesterday.

Under the law, the Army ordered some TV and illegal radio stations to stop broadcasting out of a concern that they may spread false information.

Takorn Tantasith, NBTC's secretary-general, said the commission and the Army have jointly shut down 2,000 stations that had not been granted a licence and 1,000 new ones.

The Army yesterday also ordered at least 11 cable and satellite TV stations to stop broadcasting, pending further notice. The Army also said the networks had to cease work in order to maintain law and order.

The channels include the anti-government BlueSky and pro-government Asia Update, while the networks shut down are ASTV, MV5, DNN, Asia Update, BlueSky, UDD, P&P, FourChannel, MFTV and Tnews.

As some of these channels are still posting content on their websites, the NBTC will have licensed Internet service providers to take down these sites.
