People with HIV/Aids, who are qualified for the universal Bt30 health scheme, will next year be entitled to anti-retroviral pills regardless of the number of CD4 (cluster of differentiation 4) in their blood, ThaiPlus network said yesterday.

Previously, only those who had a CD4 count in their blood of less than 200 were given anti-retrovirals before the level was adjusted to 350, ThaiPlus chairman Apiwat Kwangkaew said.

The National Health Security Office's decision to allow everybody who has tested positive free access to the expensive medication will go into effect next year.

CD4 are white blood cells that are an essential part of the human immune system, according to an online reference source.
