Flashermac
From the moment of the first revelations of America's intrusive worldwide spy network last year, it seemed inevitable that Thailand would appear in the reports. And now it has. Another top secret paper released by US spy-turned-whistleblower Edward Snowden shows an unhealthy link between America's intelligence agencies and Thai authorities. According to the report, US spies have placed listening and monitoring devices on the main communications cables linking Thailand with the rest of the world. This demands a swift and complete explanation by Thai authorities. ... http://www.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opinion/420755/reveal-all-on-us-spying

King Kung
Thailand is on the list of "third parties" cooperating with the spy operation. The Thai government likely approved of the monitoring if some of the information was shared with them. Same in Germany. They have their own spy network and many spy networks work for both countries. Short of whispering in someone's ear, all communication is vulnerable. There is no such thing as privacy.
Flashermac
I was here in the 1970s when student activists were demanding the US bases leave Thailand. All that then remained were some "listening stations" in Lampang and elsewhere, which relayed communications picked up by US spy satellites over the area. The Thai military did not want the stations closed, since the US shared everything that concerned Thailand that they picked up from China and Hanoi. This was when Hanoi was still considered a threat, as there was communist guerrilla activity around Khao Kor. US Navy planes based at Sattahip kept an eye on the Cambodia area of the gulf, also sharing anything of interest with the Thais. I expect this is something similar. But who knows.
