Al-Qaeda In India’S First Attack Is So Pathetic It Is Almost Comical

Last week, Ayman al-Zawahiri, the man who took over al-Qaeda after Osama bin Laden was killed, announced a new branch of al-Qaeda had been formed in the Indian Subcontinent. Well, that group, al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, carried out its first attack on the anniversary of 9/11. Oh, you didn’t hear about it? Well, that is because the attack was a dismal failure.

Ten heavily armed militants attacked what they thought was an American aircraft carrier. The only problem was it was a frigate belonging to the Pakistani Navy. Three militants were killed in the attack, four were captured and three were arrested the following day while only two Pakistani sailors were wounded in the brief fight.

The frigate was docked in Karachi when it was attacked. It is believed the jihadist militants were hoping to take over an American aircraft carrier, a task that would be difficult with 50 heavily armed men let alone 10. Oh, and by the way, there are major differences between a frigate and an aircraft carrier, something that apparently never occurred to these foolish souls.

An American Nimitz-class carrier is over 1,000 feet long and over 130 feet tall from the waterline. A Zulfiquar (Sword) class frigate in the Pakistan Navy is 404 feet long and less than 50 feet tall from the waterline. See the difference? No? Here is a picture of an American aircraft carrier (left) with two ships next to it. The Pakistani frigate which was attacked would be smaller than the ship on the right of this photo:

Okay, now you get it? This is hardly a case of mistaken identity. This is just pure stupidity. How does one even come close to thinking a frigate could be an aircraft carrier? An aircraft carrier has planes and helicopters on it. A frigate, depending on size and class, has one or two helicopters. It is kind of like attacking a tugboat and thinking it is a cruise ship. But hey, at least they got the color of the ship right. Both are gray in color.

In reality, and all joking aside, this is how desperate al-Qaeda is becoming. They are no longer the big dog in the eyes of radical Islamists. That role is now occupied by ISIL, otherwise known as ISIS, which boasts over 30,000 fighters in their ranks and hundreds of millions of dollars in their coffers. To put that in perspective, al-Qaeda at its peak could boast only a few thousand fighters and a bankroll of about 20-30 million. Now, in order to boost recruitment, al-Qaeda is looking heavily in Pakistan and even Sri Lanka and India for fighters. If this attack is any indication, they might need to look harder or better yet give up their hopes of accomplishing their goals.
