Flashermac
In a save bid to save Nan's tree tunnels, the "Big Trees Project" will this morning submit over 6,000 signatures as part of a petition against cutting down the big trees to the National Legislative Assembly's Committee on Transport. The group wants the committee to set up a cooperative effort between the authorities and the public to preserve the unique tree tunnels on the Nan to Chaloem Phra Kiat Road (Highway no 1080). The signatures were gathered via a campaign at Change.org yesterday, which was the group's latest move against Nan's Second Road and Transit Division's plan to expand the road width from nine metres to 12 metres and hence to cut down the trees. The group said Nan's three tree tunnels provide shade and beauty to this highway and they could also be developed as a tourist attraction. They said the tree tunnels consist of a unique mix of tree species, so saving the tree tunnels would be a sustainable economic development. Road expansion plans halted In response to the protest, the division announced a halt to the road expansion plan pending the results of talks on March 19 to try to settle the dispute. Nan officials had earlier said that they would listen to people's opinions and proceed accordingly. However, they claimed that 90 per cent of residents at a public hearing last November agreed to widening the road. Dr Kanit Tantisiriwit, one of the campaign's supporters, said he was not against the highway expansion but wanted to save as many trees as possible. "I lived in Nan for a very long period and I usually drive through this road. I always appreciate the beauty of the trees tunnels - it cannot be found elsewhere in Thailand," Kanit said adding that he would join the upcoming talk to express his opinion in hope of saving the trees. There are three tree tunnels on Highway 1080. The first is the 7km Pha Sing, the second the 10km-long Tha Wangpa and the third is a 10km Pua and Chiang Klang. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Campaign-to-try-and-save-Nans-unique-tree-tunnels-30255757.html Can't find and pics. Flashermac
You can see from the heavy traffic that taxpayers' money definitely needs to be spent on widening these roads ...
