Thais indulging in more unprotected sex

US leads field on average encounters

Thais are having more sex than they were a year ago, and many do it unprotected.

The average Thai has sex 99 times a year, up from 70 last year. That puts us in 15th place among the 28 nations surveyed for the 2001 Durex global sex survey, or slightly above average.

Durex, a condom maker, said its annual poll of 18,500 people showed the world was having more sex and starting earlier than ever before, and the United States was leading the field.

The survey _ carried out in May and published ahead of World Aids Day on Dec 1 _ showed respondents had sex 97 times a year on average, up from 96 last year.

But Americans said they had sex on average 124 times a year with more than 14 different partners, and were also starting earlier at the average age of 16.

The Greeks made love the second most often, 117 times a year on average, while the Germans were the second youngest to get started at 16.6 years.

France's reputation as a nation of lovers took a hit: they are now having sex 100 times a year, down from 121, and slumping from top in the number of partners to second with 13, compared to 17 a year ago and a global average of 7.7.

Japan remained bottom of the lovers league with an average of 36 sexual encounters a year.

Thais start sex at 18.7 years on average, compared with 19.5 last year, and slightly later than the global average of 18 years.

Almost three-quarters of Thai adults are concerned about contracting HIV/Aids or other sexually transmitted diseases, but many are not protecting themselves.

The survey found 23% of Thais take no measures to prevent the spread of HIV/Aids. Of those who do, 40% insist on using a condom for casual sex. Just 9% would ask their partner about his or her sexual history.

``Although many people are taking measures to protect themselves, it is worrying that there is still a large number who are choosing to take risks,'' said Jon Gray of SSL Healthcare (Thailand) Ltd, the Durex manufacturer.

Only 4% of Thais consider sex as their number one past-time: many more prefer a good sleep (20%), watching television (18%) or even working (13%).

When choosing a partner, most people initially fall for personality (28%), while 20% prefer good looks and 10% choose physique. Thais say they are not influenced by money.

For Thai men, Japan is the country from which they would most like to have partners (41%) while 8% of women also favour partners from Japan.

Survey-wide, single people had the least sex, 86 times a year, and the libido of married couples (100 times) also trailed those living together (145 times).

One in 10 people said they never had sex.

Actually, I found it pretty interesting (comments about money quite rightly ignored.
