Guest
This is probably a stupid question that will reveal immensely my complete cluelessness with respect to computers but here goes.. Just bought a new laptop computer at Panthip. Have an old laptop in the apartment in its death throes. Need to transfer data and programs from the old one to the new one. I link a USB cable between the two and both computers ask me for software which I obviously don't have. So... any advice on how to dump data from the old to the new? I don't have an external CR burner, either. Thanks much, Gordo
adikgede
If both computers have an ethernet port (looks like a phone jack but bigger) you shouldn't need any special software just a cross over cable. Then look in your computers help files to set up networking so that the two computers are visible to one another in Network Nieghbourhood.
Guest
Thanks, The new one has an ethernet port, the old one, a vintage 1998 NEC does not.
Guest
Normal USB cables have different ends (big flat end for the PC and a squarish end for the device). If you have a cable with the same connector on both sides and it is asking for software, that would be a USB network cable. Try to find the diskette it came with or buy another cable like this at Pantip. Since this is a laptop, you won't be able to use a real cheap ethernet PCI board, but you could buy a PC Card Ethernet or USB ethernet adapter. Ethernet is much more complex to setup: set static IP addresses, enable sharing, grant access rights. You will also need a special "twisted" ethernet cable to plug 2 PC's together versus the straight through cables for going into a hub/switch. Another option is if you have a digital camera, copy files to the flash card, then to the PC.
Adams167
Unless the Data is really bulky you could Email the Data files to yourself and re-install the programs from the CD's etc.(probably a safer and cleaner way to deal with the programs anyway)? Brink15
ER, Every PC I've seen has only had the 5 pin USB connector socket. The other end you describe is a 4 position connector. The 4 position is [/b]only[/b] used with peripherals like cameras or printers. It's a no brainer. You can't plug it in wrong if you are using a true USB network cable, ie 5-pin USB at both ends. The "twisted" cable you mentioned is the ethernet cross-over cable adikgede has already mentioned. Gorshar, which O/S is installed on the two PCs? adikgede
Here are some USB solutions that claim to include software. http://www.lpt.com/Products/NetLinqCable/netlinqcable.htm http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/usb_smartnet_cables.html If you haven't already spent money I still think doing it with the tools that already come with windows is the way to go. I have seen PCMCIA ethernet cards for as little as $20 here in Indonesia and only $30 with a modem. The price of a crossover (sometimes called pc 2 pc) ethernet cable is insignificant, but you will be miserable if they are crappy cables. Sometimes lazy people snip out some of the extra wires. Here is a diagram of a proper cable: http://www.whcs.com.au/services/network/xover.htm You can also do it with, a null modem cable or a printer cable (both sides have to be pinned) or if both computers have an Infrared port you can do it wireless, all without purchasing any additional software. Here are some very clear instructions on setting up file sharing under windows 9X, ME http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/wintcpip-howto.html Connecting two computer with a null modem cable: http://www.vision.net.au/~timotsc/null/nullmodem.htm
think_too_mut
It's not hard to do what you need, but for one off exercise I would just go back to Panthip and pay guys 200 Bahts or so to transfer what is needed. They'll open the old PC, fix some loan card in it and do the transfer. If time is not an issue, they may even use a serial laplink cable. Not worth trouble learning it now - unless you do it frequently, next time you need it there will be something new you don't know about.
