One guy I know called the Thai visa section at the Embassy in Vientiane, asked about everything he would need in detail, and once he was there was told something different! Once last year they suddenly started demanding to see Thai bank-account books, even for a Tourist visa! Make it easy on yourself for the first time. Go to Penang. You can fly straight there, so there's the airplane trip. Take the train back from Butterworth on the mainland, and that will allow you to stop off and see different places in Thailand. Geylang is the legal red light district and whilst its pretty safe and central, its not really the best place to bring a girl who has her own suitcase. Getting a taxi around there though is never a problem !!! You can certainly get tourist standard hotels for around S$80 in quite OK locations.
