Thanks for the link. And to answer your question would be people's exposure to it. It's like asking why does everybody like Eric Clapton and B.B.King so much when there is so much more to blues music than this. It depends how deep you dig. Having said that, I do still believe that Carabao are an exceptionally talented band and had something special there, though since the late 80's/early 90's the lineup has changed so much that it's hard to discern what is actually the real Carabao sound. I guess it's Aed's distinctive vocal and songwriting and Lek's chorusing guitar lines (when he is present). I do believe the definitive Carabao albums, albeit later and non-original line-up are Jaak Kluay and Sen Thang Sai Pla Daek. The Carabao 15 years vol. 1 and 2 (I believe not availiable on CD anymore) was a great set of songs re-worked from their early stuff.

Cheers

Cheers,

Dan

Carabao's appeal is not just in the music, but what they stand for. Some would say stood for, but if you ever get a chance to talk to Ad, you'll find an extremely genuine character. Go to a concert (upcountry or at a fair, rather than a pub gig) and you'll see what he means to ordinary people, far beyond the music.

On the other hand, Carabao's musical approach has given them much broader appeal than, say, Caravan - whose ideology you could say is 'purer'.

You could say this about a lot of other singers especially Jintara and Siriporn. I still do not consider carabao as authentic thai music, OK if you like it, but not for me. It's just not exciting the same way that seeing a morlam or lukthung act is. -peter

Anyone who wants to discuss Thai music or anything else for that matter, especially social topics relating to Thailand, could try the forum at carabaothai.com.

I just started it up a week or so ago, so it's still a bit quiet, but it has got a few regular Thai participants. One or two at least have very good English skills. Although the site gets a lot of hits from abroad no foreigners have joined in yet.

I was thinking more of their political/social impact. Actually, though, I think Ad Carabao's lukthung influences are pretty well-known.
