reprint of a rare book

yesterday, browsing through asia books, i found a reprint of a book published in the fifties i have searched for unsuccessfully for years.

"forgotten kingdom" by peter goullart, published by john murray travel classics (isbn 0-7195-5544 2) about the author's stay as a chinese official in the kingdom of likiang from 1939 to 1947 on the foot of the himalayas.

peter goullart was one of the most remarkable europeans in asia. born in russia at the beginning of the 20th century, he escaped the russian revolution with his mother to china. i was lucky to find many years ago a first print of another book of his about taoist monastries, and ever since tried to get my hands on his other books.

an absolute must read if your interest on asia is beyond the bars.

i think it was called "monastry of the jade mountain" or similar. good luck finding it, i think it was not reprinted. very difficult to find, but a tremendeously beautyfully written book, full of heart and athmosphere. and you know the author really does know his stuff.

i could not detect a hint of the bitterness of the late blofeld.
