So we find that the esteemed Dr Thamanat holds a Phd and that his dissertation document shows it was submitted to Calamus University and California University (CUFCE). This raises a couple of points. The first, Calamus, is a known paper mill, money in degrees out, end of. The second might, or might not, be the real thing. It seems there really is a California University (CUFCE) in California but that its activities seem to be restricted to issuing equivalency awards. Another California University CUFCE exists in the Philippines with an entirely different business model (ahem!). I'm not a great education expert, my official studies finished after tech school so I am happy for someone to explain. The CUFCE (real one) says it just issues equivalency awards. If this CUFCE is indeed the real one and legitimate, is it reasonable they would be comfortable appearing alongside unaccredited institutions? Also interesting is it possible to read online such documents. I would be utterly fascinated to read this dissertation. I presume it was published in English.

I recommend the BBC documentary series on the Vietnam war. Made over a period of ten years it is quite the body of work. It may be different today but my experience of Thai banking is that whilst it is becoming more internet friendly, in some ways, it is not particularly international friendly. I bank with Bangkok Bank here. When I wanted to open a new account about 2 years ago all the banks I tried locally wanted paperwork stamped by my embassy to confirm my Thailand address. With that in hand the Bangkok Bank agreed they could help but I needed to go to their head office in Silom to open the account. They have a 'foreigner' section there and the process was straightforward. They issued the usual savings type account with an ATM/Debit card. I was also able to set up access on my mobile using their downloaded application. I find the application counter intuitive in several ways but after writing down the steps needed for the few things I do it soon became simple enough. I can do pretty much all my in-country banking through the application but a word of caution should you choose such a route is to set the transfer and withdrawal limits as high as you can accept. Changing them later requires visits to a BBL branch and filling out copious forms along with copies of passport/visa etc. Not easy to do when you are out of the country for an extended period and the the telephone banking person I spoke to simply advised "Sorry sir, we do not have a solution for your problem". I have found no facility which allows me to do international transfers of money out of Thailand without going to a major branch and filling out all the paperwork. I can however use my debit card to withdraw cash pretty much anywhere on the planet up to the maximum daily limit as set for the card. I can of course transfer money in from pretty much anywhere.

Went to Pathum Thani immigration office this morning. My mother wants to stay extend her stay more than the 30 days. Had to fill in TM.28 despite not doing that when she first arrived almost a month ago. No mention of TM.30 despite her not being registered anywhere on first arrival. She is staying at our place which is registered in my wife's name, they wanted a copy of the house book and her ID card that's all.

This is data available on your phone when you are outside with no nearby wi-fi acces point (home, Starbucks, McD's etc.) Unless you have a dual sim phone then you will be tied to choosing a data package from the provider whose sim card you use. If you have a dual sim phone then you can get a second sim card, real or virtual depending on the phone, and have two numbers from different providers using one for phone calls and the other for data. Wi-Fi is a whole different connection and provided you have the logon details you can connect (usually for free). Think of your phone as having 3 different radios in it, one for calls and sms, one for data, 3G/4G whatever, and one for wi-fi. Depending on device complexity and price point there might be more than this but each of those three services and systems is essentially separate. \

I first went to China in the mid 80's. At that time it was still pretty much as Cav mentioned about in the 70's. HK was indeed vastly different but I don't think there has ever been any "democracy" there. I think it's true that once all you needed to do in Hong Kong was keep quiet, work super hard, keep going and success, and money, was likely assured, or at least possible. Today that's not quite the same, The mainland is much more competitive today and so many opportunities have either already been exploited or are no longer viable. Yes, there are new industries but they are far less people driven than for previous generations. As much as anything I think the Hong Kong younger generation feel the Chinese controlled government is not helping them achieve the success their fathers and grandfathers saw under colonial rule.

Large numbers of those now protesting know nothing of life under colonial rule. I can only imagine it is the grasp of embers or some perceived idea of how it was.

Used to be a frequent visitor, 2-3 times a year going back to my first time in 1988 through until about 5 years ago. I've never really played much there other than a few ladies met over the years in hotel bars wherever I've happened to be staying. A few Filipinas and one or two Thai. I found the Filipinas to be mostly the ones in search of the long con whilst the TG's were more business oriented but some Thais would drop the price, especially after a few drinks. One was very nice and became a sort of semi-regular. I would see her on visits there and we would hook up on occasion when she was home on "holiday". Was there in early July, just as the noise level started to rise. Just a week, peaceful and too busy working to do any playing. For sure they are still there but like a lot of that sort of business much of it has gone online. Websites like OK Cupid, Date in Asia, Thai (or other nationality) Friendly etc. apps like Tinder of course. Much more cost effective as they don't need to be warming a bar stool dressed to fuck.
