Sihanoukville the next Phuket?

THE "largest and wildest" full-moon party, promised the yellow flier taped to a phone booth on Khaosan Road in Bangkok. Another installment of Thailand's girls-gone-wild bacchanal on the island of Ko Phangan? Or its bigger brother, Ko Samui? Or maybe it was the newcomer Ko Phi Phi, a remote island that is luring younger partygoers in the post-tsunami boom.

Not quite. This particular moonlight spectacle, in fact, wouldn't even be in Thailand, but across the border, in Cambodia's budding seaside town, Sihanoukville. It is "just nine-and-a-half hours from Bangkok," according to the flier, the work of Cambodian entrepreneurs hoping to turn Sihanoukville into the latest party hot spot.

one does wonder who writes horrendous fluff pieces like this ny times one.

would anyone who's been to the region describe Ko Phi Phi as "a remote island"? and really, who needs a next phuket?

sihanoukville itself is truly a dump, its beaches at best mediocre. nearby kampot is far more pleasant.

Only way that can potentially happen is if they open an international airport(heard rumors it may happen in the future) with direct flights to/from Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, etc., and as a result, resort development takes off. There are some undeveloped off shore islands that are intriguing, and Sokha Beach is remniscient of some of the beaches in Southern Thailand.

Since some of the most famous beaches in Thailand (Koh Samui, etc.) are becoming overdeveloped and Angkor is becoming more and more famous all over the world more tourists will shift to Cambo in the next decade for sure. It's already visible in Siem Reap (Angkor) where the tourist industry is exploding (with dozens of new hotels, from cheap hostels to luxury 5 star hotels, restaurants and bars, etc.).

The big problem is that Cambo does not have any development plans and the since the Khmer elite is even more corrupt** than the Thai elite many of Cambos natural features will be destroyed soon. IMHO it will only take a few years until the beaches in Cambo will be over exploited and large parts of it's forests are erased.

** Corrupt politicians already sold the police station and art academy in PP and are forcing the to relocate outside the town (but of course they didn't even start to build new structures for the relocation). The same happened to the police station in Siem Reap. There were rumours that even a part of the Royal Palace has been sold - not to speak about the 50 year lease of the Killing Fields and that whole Angkor is in foreign hands since years already.

well greedy bastards they truly are whoever those angkor owners are

Of course, that's how it works in Cambo. Do you know any other country which has sold it's absolutely most valuable cultural asset (concering income, religion and national identity) to a foreign company?

Concerning Sianoukville I just found this report on the TOA board:

Matter of fact, Snooky in general seems to have big things planned for it to develop its oceanfront potential. Just left there, and many things appear to be happening there that portend a serious attempt at creating another hotspot for the SEA tourist dollar. Tremendous amounts of building going on, surprisingly with much emphasis on oft overlooked items like sewage pipes and septic ponds. New blacktop roads being placed, and attention to other tourist friendly infrastructure items. Word up is that Hun Sen himself has heavily invested in the Otres Beach area particularly, and that the new airport will be functional in about a year, or heads will roll. Much improvement has been done to the port facilities, and ongoing construction of new hotels and resorts is very much evident. And then there's the ongoing rumor of an offshore island being leased as a military base by the USA. Notwithstanding that item, there is no doubt "something going on". The area of "grass shack" bars across from the Golden Sand Hotel has at least 3 bars being built for leasing on 3 year intervals to some very savvy Aussie-Kiwi-UK bar owners looking to cash in on leaving the glut and expense of Thailand for the comparatively cheaper, and decidedly friendlier environs of Cambodia.

Although the beaches can't compare to Thailand, Snooky has some pretty areas that will attract a lot of people if the prices stay down. That seems to fly in the face of what normally happens tho, and I saw bus after bus being unloaded at the Golden Sands, of Japanese,Chinese, and Korean tourists and businessmen.
