Now we're speaking about the old colonies instead of the motherland, Mac, when did the US get the dollar instead of the pound?

 

The US government adopted a decimal dollar system -- based on the Spanish pillar dollar -- right after independence. But the old currency hung on for years after that. I've seen George Washington's diary entries, and he always used the English system. I've even seen documents using pounds and shillings as late as the 1820s.

 

Interesting what Oz did. The pound was split into two dollars. One shilling became 10 cents -- same sized coin. Six pence became 5 cents, a penny 2 cents. Oz was on the dollar by the time I got there, but the old coins were still in circulation. Never really understood why they went to a dollar instead of a decimal pound. I suppose it didn't occur to them.
