Is Thailand (Bangkok) really that addictive?

Ok well I am a newbe but I need some info before I plan a trip to BKK. I have read the stickman info and all about BG's and what not. I meen BKK sounds nice and everything and people talk about it being addictive droping their high paying office job here and moving over there workin for pennies. I doubt that BKK or even Thailand is that addictive I refuse to beleive that one place can actually have such a strong affect on people. Is Thailand really that addictive? if it is tell me why?

Okay OP, are you considering coming here to Thailand? If so... why? What do you think is your reason for coming here? The addiction comes from one or two reasons. You ask a question, but you give no answer or reason as to why you ask this question. What are you looking for, and why would you come here yourself? To begin with your question and our answers we need to ask you why are you even considering coming here to begin with? From the/your answers can come our own answers as to your question. Addictive? Yes. For some. But, the why has many diverse answers and you need to tell us why you are even asking the question. Obviously you are thinking of coming here... but, why?

Hopefully the chap found what he wanted by now.

The poor bastard has probably been to and fro the LOS dozens of times by now - for all we know, he has a condo in Patts and is subsidising the lifestyle of 3 girls, their families and at least 7 very contented buffalo.

I guess the real point of digging this thread up was 'If I knew then what I know now, would I have taken a chance on that second trip ?'. The answer is yes, but only because none of the other places I visited were a patch on Thailand in terms of 'fun factor', and that's even with the 'things sure aint what they used to be' expat brigade droning on about how its all turned to shit. The GFE is dead, everything costs too much and there are too many sex tourists pushing up prices (and giving the rest of us a bad name..) - hell on earth, right ?

Even when the shit has hit the fan (and it has .. on several occasions), I'm *never* happy to go back to Swampy. By contrast, every single time I've sat in an airport in a regional hub with a ticket to Bangkok (including flights from Udon and CM), it has been with an air of anticipation. I know the city eats people alive, particularly Farang, and I detest the crowds at peak times, but nowhere else fills me with the same joy - KL, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Sillypore etc all have their moments, but none of them get into your blood the way Bangkok does. It can be hot, dirty, noisy and just plain nasty, but isn't that *exactly* the way you like your women ? :grinyes:

By now, many of the old-timers will have rolled their eyes and gone back to surfing for porn, but chances are they don't have to take that cab to Swampy too often : half their luck. Would I be happy to sit in BKK traffic for 2+ hours a day ? Hell, no, but you don't base your fantasies on someone else's mundane reality. Bangkok rocks and it's as addictive as anything ever cooked up in a lab.

Thank Christ for the BTS these days. Some things have changed for the better. Hopefully they'll extend the BTS all over BKK in the near future. And the subway as well. Love the underground they have here now. Great way to travel, quick, easy, cheap and fast.

The climate must have a lot to do with it.I mean, without the warm ,sultry weather Bangkok could be more like London or Moscow :surprised:

i certainly don't find bkk addictive, probably spent around 10-12 nights in the city over 11 years and have seen most of what i wanted to see.

quite happy to land there and just stay in the airport whilst awaiting another flight.

but thailand is addictive and i just ;ove the country and people.

Really great if you like coal mines. Get off at the Bangsue station some time and enjoy your walk of what seems like about 2 kilometers to get to the surface.

The BTS has now gone all the way to Bering, wherever the fark that is. (Alaska maybe.) A line is going out to Rangsit, though it has a long ways yet before it is even finished to Nonthaburi.
