Working on the Web

Hi folks. I'm Craig, proprieter of www.LostInThailand.com and JSwebScript.com, regular Thailand traveller and web designer, DHTML and javscript specialist. I'm working up the courage to quit my cushy job in Oslo and hit the freelance trail in Thailand. Anybody out there doing something similar? Care to comment? I'd appreciate any input... smile.gif" border="0

Sawadee Sukhumvit.

Good point that - nobody's ever mentioned it before. I fixed it for you, but you have to click BACK twice, I'm afraid. (All framesets are like that). Btw: between the back and forward buttons is a downward-pointing arrow which gives a list of the titles of all pages visited in the current browser session. You can always escape via this route. So, er, I can quit my job now?

Hi,

I am a freelance in IT (SAP, Oracle, ...) since 1996. I am currently working in France but I will move to Thailand next year.

I do have an appointment with the BOI (Bureau Of investment) here in Paris tomorow to see how I could start a Freelance Job in Thailand with the BOI's help (visa, work permit, ...)

I will let you know wenesday, ok ?

Marc.

Hi,

I have worked as a webdesigner for about 18 months in Thailand, and tried to continue doing this as a freelancer. It is not easy.

If you can work for international clients, then you should probably be fine, but if you are thinking about targeting Thai customers I would say forget about the idea.

Prices for webdesign are very low here, with some webdesigners making as little as 8,000 Baht a month. I am pretty sure you are better than most of those webdesigners (haven't seen your site, because like Sukhumvit I despise sites that won't let me leave), but this is mostly irrelevant, since the people you are dealing with will only be interested in how much it costs.

Furthermore, since you probably don't speak Thai (or at least not good enough to discuss business) you will not be able to deal with a lot of companies.

My advice, if you have a good job now, don't give it up to come here. You could try working out a deal with your current employer though, maybe you can work for them from here.

Sanuk!

Hi Craig,

As I told you, I was with the BOI and some lawyers here in Paris yesterday. I privetaly talk with one of them, asking him if I could start a business in Thailand as a Freelance.

The answer is : Yes, Freelance status does exists in Thailand and Yes, according to the law you could apply for such a status (which, by the way, automaticaly come with a work permit of course). BUT the application will probably be refused by the authorities because you will not invest any money in Thailand and you will not give any job to Thai nationals.

So even if the law say YES, the officer in charge of your application wil say NO !

But I will try anyway. I will fix a private appointment with the BOI here in France and complete the form... I have nothing to loose. If it doesnt work then I will try an other way...

Marc.

Hi Marc.

Interesting catch 22 that there. I know a Dutch guy in Hua Hin who started up for himself (graphic design), and he employs a Thai designer - maybe he HAD to! I'll ask him.

Stay in touch, please. craig@lostinthailand.com
