Private Dancer

Stephen Leather's 'Private Dancer'

is an excellent read.

Anyone else read it ?

I like the style of the first person(usually

I don't) but in this case one feels as if

one is talking to the characters in the

bar and not reading about them in a book.

I feel it is accurate although if one has

had only 'fantastic' experiences in Thailand

the book may seem jaundiced.

The book can be downloaded free from the net.

Read it and "The Solitary Man" and "The Tunnel Rats" and presently leafing through "The Vets" all by Leather and all gripping. I'd reccommend "The Solitary Man" for you, I loved what happens to the Farang Lady reporter.

Leathers a great authur but sometimes I'm reluctant to recommend Private Dancer because it leaves people with a lasting impression of All thai women which isn't too endearing.

When I was reading it I felt as if I was living it. Fabulous.

I'm just about to finish the last few pages of 'Solitary Man' over a pint of Guinness.

There are good and bad in all countries

and I have met and had good fun(friendly

laughing, dancing and joking believe it or

not) with bar girls. I found 'Private Dancer'

accurate though and in a way a little bit

of a warning to fellow farangs to be careful

and not be too arrogant and 'cock-sure'(confident).They are still guests in

another country. Don't let the Singha go to

the head, it is 6% after all.

I have to thank Mr Stickman for the direction

to Stephen Leather and other writers and

information. I like Senor Leather the best.

Pity his publishers don't share our opinion

about 'Private Dancer' !

I really enjoy his books also. I have read all the unpublished stuff and the Vets. Awesome books and a nice guy. I emailed him and got a really positive response. I like to think it was really him that wrote the email. A wannabe writer friend of mine wrote him also and he responded with tips on how to get published and some encouraging words. Private dancer should be required reading and the other 3 unpublished works show great range.

Dear Smittyjp,

Just the same reaction I received.

Must be one of the good guys.

Where does he find the time to reply?

Trying to get hold of some of his

other books.

i found private dancer to be immensely entertaining reading, but i also thought that its portrayal of thai culture in general, and thai women including BGs in particular, to be quite cynical. i don't believe that LOS would have the appeal for so many of us that it does if matters were quite as dreary as protrayed in the book. having said that, i would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a fun read or is inclined to unhealthily romanticize LOS or TGs.
