  1. Having not had more than a taste, of an alcoholic drink, for some years,  I am now drinking heavily and onto my second bottle of imported beer Lao (big), after 2 bottles of random wine, in order to restore the All Black's said Mojo.

It is 3:47pm on a Saturday afternoon.

  2. A bunch of ones I've seen recently and can be moved to comment on:

The Last Voyage of the Demeter 2023

...the Captain's Log, from Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel "Dracula"... is the basis for this movie.

I quite enjoyed this, not least for the rendering of the ship and how authentic it was, with no anachronisms.

    Heart of Stone 2023

...An intelligence operative for a shadowy global peacekeeping agency races to stop a hacker from stealing its most valuable and dangerous weapon...

    Not another Lady - Bond/Bourne - movie, I thought...

But quite good. Gal Gadot is a tight and attractive lass.

    Mob Land 2023

John Travolta does service in a minor role, the rest was slow and desultory, good for a rainy day.

    Inside Man 2023

...Bobby will stop at nothing to get close to the head of the crew, Roy DeMeo (Danny Abeckaser), to expose the murder and corruption. But as Bobby sinks deeper into the mob and more bodies drop, the price for absolution may be higher than he can afford...

    Not bad, I liked this.

    The Engineer 2023

As much as the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and it's participants leave me cold, this was an engaging watch, trying to give the point of view from all sides (yes there are more than 2). They didn't purport that this was based on real events, but it has that feeling

Good movie if you can stomach the zeal on all sides.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny [2023]

Archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary artifact that can change the course of history. Old school entertainment with Spielberg written all over it, done many times before, has its moments.

Uneven use of AI/CGI in the beginning where Harrison Ford and Toby Jones were portrayed as their younger selves.

Lots of stars. As you say it has it's moments.

Could a been a lot better for the size of the franchise and the star power in it.

    Fool's Paradise [2023]

A down-on-his-luck publicist discovers a former mental health patient who looks just like a misbehaving movie star. He soon becomes an unlikely celebrity when he gets thrown into the bright lights and behind-the-scenes bustle of Hollywood. Several well-known actors are in this satirical movie about Hollywood movies (yawn). Possibly one of the most self-indulgent and annoying movies ever made. The lead character who also directed has a very punch-able face throughout.

Yes in the end, it could have been better.

But in the vein of a silent movie character in a non silent film, it was OK.

Remembering "Being There" with Peter Sellers, it's a reasonable attempt.

I suppose the young people would like this.

  5. In the Gulf of Thailand, off the coast of Chon Buri in the Sattahip district, a naval training exercisenamed Blue Strike 2023 is in full swing. This bilateral exercise between the naval forces of Thailand and China is a seven-day event, which started on Sunday, September 3 and is scheduled to wrap up on Sunday, September 10.

This exercise aims to facilitate the sharing of naval expertise, prepare for potential humanitarian assistance and disaster relief situations, and strengthen military relations between the two countries.

The annual military event includes the participation of Chinese submarines and warships, including the Changcheng submarine, the Siming Shan amphibious dock landing ship, the Anyang guided-missile frigate, and the Chaohu comprehensive supply ship.

Both armies are engaging in a series of training exercises for Blue Strike 2023, including land and sea training, sniping exercises, maritime search and rescue, and jungle survival. These exercises are taking place both in the upper reaches of the Gulf of Thailand and at the Phra Maha Chetsadachao Camp of the Marine Division in Sattahip.

In a concurrent development, approval has been given by Royal Thai Navy (RTN) Chief Choengchai Chomchoengpaet for the substitution of a German-manufactured engine with a Chinese-made CHD620 engine. This replacement is for a Yuan-class S26T submarine currently under assembly in China by the China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co.

Moreover, the RTN has earmarked a budget of 200 million baht for the recovery operation of a sunken vessel in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Of this total, 110 million baht will be utilised from the existing budget while an additional 90 million baht is expected to be sourced from the Budget Bureau to facilitate the mission. This mission is a testament to the financial commitment and priority placed on tackling maritime challenges and enhancing naval capabilities. Sunken Vessel

Overall, the Blue Strike 2023 exercise presents a valuable opportunity for both the Thai and Chinese navies to learn from each other, improve their skills, and strengthen their mutual relationship. In the face of potential humanitarian crises and disaster relief scenarios, this joint training will equip both forces with the necessary knowledge and preparedness to respond effectively.

The commitment to upgrading submarine capabilities and the allocation of significant resources for recovery operations further underscores the strategic focus on enhancing naval capabilities and readiness.

  6. The Srettha Administration starts on a very fetid note – literally.

Starchitect Duangrit Bunnag, a key promoter of the ruling Pheu Thai Party and key member of Care, a pro-Pheu Thai Think Tank, was the architect of the malodorous event less than a day after the new Cabinet was endorsed by the King.

Yesterday (Sept. 2), Duangrit organized feces throwing event in Bangkok as a result of his public vow made recently that the Pheu Thai Party would only form a coalition with Move Forward Party and never join a coalition with pro-junta parties, namely Phalang Pracharath, the United Thai Nation Party and Bhumjai Thai – he was so certain that he challenged the public to throw feces at him if such coalition materialized. And it materialized, formally, yesterday.

Four hours before the event began, Duangrit rang me up and invited me to the malodorous and bizarre event. Perhaps Duangrit ringing me was partly because I played my role over the past few weeks through my own social media account, on Twitter and Facebook, in calling for Duangrit to keep his vow.

In fact, I posted on social media four days ago that I have forgiven Duangrit, no longer seek to punish him, and besiege others to not go ahead with such a stinking act as Duangrit was honest enough to honor his words by announcing that he was going ahead with the self-humiliation event.

In the end, there were half a dozen people throwing feces at Duangrit yesterday in a much-publicized event. During our brief phone conversation before the event, I asked Duangrit if it was his personal belief that the Pheu Thai party would never ever join pro-junta parties (which was led by the very coup makers who overthrew the Pheu Thai government through the 2014 putsch) or was it that he was merely sticking to the official Pheu Thai line.

Duangrit said it was his personal belief, “a fact,” and that in the end such a coalition was not planned prior to the May general election. Yet, I still wonder if Duangrit was a victim of Pheu Thai Party’s propaganda, which has severely undermined many people’s trust in the party and the new government.

I was not at the feces throwing event yesterday because I was indisposed due to a very important funeral. Nevertheless, watching the video clip, which includes a redshirt Pheu Thai supporter rushing to cover Duangrit from feces being thrown at him and pushed away by Duangrit who was determined to see it through, was painful and heartbreaking to watch.

Despite that, some were not satisfied and thought it was just a ‘shit show’ and noted Duangrit’s wearing of white hazmat suit and a breathing mask to protect himself from the shit thrown at him.

Others say why would not Duangrit demand that key Pheu Thai figures and the party keep its promises (which was made by party leader Cholnan Srikaew, then PM candidate Srettha Thavisin, who is now PM, and others) that the party would definitely never join a coalition with pro-junta parties.

Equally stinking, if not more so, is the reputation of key Pheu Thai figures who made similar pledges. Cholnan eventually resigned as party leader earlier this week as he had vowed to resign if his party joins pro-junta parties. Nevertheless, Cholnan became the new Public Health Minister in a government coalition with the very parties he said during the election campaign Pheu Thai would never have anything to do with.

Srettha, the new prime minister, was shrew as he had made no promises of any self-punishment and when it became clear that such a coalition was materializing, Srettha urged the public to try to forget about what he and the Pheu Thai Party had said in the past. A few days later, PM Srettha said the party’s election campaign pledge to reduce one-way BTS skytrain and MRT fares to 20 baht must be reconsidered as the government is a coalition government with 10 partners.

Trust in the Pheu Thai Party, in the new Srettha government, has been severely undermined to the point where it is hard for any reasonable Thai to say they can take whatever the party and government say at face value and not have to worry that they would not be tricked.

  7. Yes, similar goings on with my Canon Printer, had to faff around for hours, to get it to print without using the provided software and an internet connection. Like you, downloaded the drivers and then just used it.

I wonder how long it'll be before Maga folk have to have an internet connection, to conduct an AR15 massacre at a church? Could be an improvement or not...

  8. I once asked a Philippine friend who he thought had the best spoken and written English language.

He was no able to be moved from the citizens of the USA, despite me explaining to him that the citizens of England invented and still hold the ownership rights, to English...

  9. Trump blasts 'fearmongering' over new COVID strain and claims 'left wing lunatics' are trying to bring back lockdowns and mask mandates to steal the 2024 election

Former President Donald Trump is criticizing the 'fearmongering' over a spike in COVID cases amid a new contagious strain

He said Thursday the 'left wing lunatics' are trying to impose lockdowns and mask mandates to get more 'illegal dropboxes' and 'mail-in ballots'

The 2024 presidential hopeful claimed liberals are trying to bring COVID back  so they can steal the next election

    because  - of course.

  10. A précis, so the whole thing doesn't need to be read.

Unhinged ramblings from the transcript of his sit-down with New York Attorney General Letitia James in April as part of her $250 million civil lawsuit against his company:

    https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/23932452/452564_2022_people_of_the_state_of_v_people_of_the_state_of_exhibit_s__859.pdf

“I was — I considered this the most important job in the world, saving millions of lives. I think you would have nuclear holocaust, if I didn’t deal with North Korea. I think you would have a nuclear war, if I weren’t elected. And I think you might have a nuclear war now, if you want to know the truth.”

When asked whether in 2014 he was the CEO or the president of the company he owns, he says, “I don’t know exactly.”

...randomly bringing up that “the election was rigged,” asserting that “people” have told him things like “how the hell could they have sued you and put you through this stuff?” and arguing that “even the press agrees” that the case should be thrown out.

The transcript paints a picture of a Trump who was, at best, detached from the goings-on at the company that bore his name. At worst, he comes across as someone who doesn’t think there’ll be consequences for what he says under oath. Either way, it seems unlikely Trump’s April deposition will help him in October, when the trial that could put him out of business in New York kicks off.

  11. Thai King cuts ousted former leader Thaksin Shinawatra’s 8-year prison sentence to 1 year

Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn has reduced the prison sentence of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra from eight years to one, in a remarkable turn of events that caps an extraordinary decades-long political saga.

Thaksin, the head of a famed political dynasty who had dramatically returned to Thailand from a 15-year self-imposed exile last week, submitted a request for a royal pardon, the country’s outgoing justice minister confirmed Thursday.

A statement published by Thailand’s Royal Gazette Friday said the King had acknowledged Thaksin’s piea and, “with His Majesty’s graciousness, he has reduced the sentence of the male inmate Thaksin Shinawatra to one year.”... more...
