  1. No one ever said, that you said, that  the watch towers were manned. 😜

The competence comment, could also be applied, to the people not up towers, to people monitoring the system, from the little app on their phone, at the all day lunches they do, instead of sitting at their desks in front of a computer...

I can just imagine it, Somchai opens the Tsunami app on his phone, he is presented with a singe screen, which displays one of two messages ::  "Have" or "No Have".

  2. Note: misspellings are not mine, they are from the original article published Monday, January 08, 2024 in a Thai news website LINK.

    _____

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said on Monday that its defective tsunami detection buoy in the Andaman Sea has been retrieved but assured that its warning system was still effective.

The department was responding to a comment posted on the Foundation of National Disaster Warning Council’s Facebook page. The post said that Thais should not bank on just the tsunami warning system as buoy “Station 23461” had stopped working and stopped feeding information into the warning system. The comment was posted on Saturday.

However, it was not until Monday that the department responded. It said that the problems with the Station 23461 buoy were nothing new, as the department had been seeking help from the Royal Thai Navy to retrieve it since August 7 last year.

The department said it had realised that the buoy had stopped feeding information into the system on August 3 and called on the Third Naval base to retrieve it for maintenance.

The buoy was stationed about 340 kilometres northwest of Phuket.

The department said it had purchased a replacement, and it was en route from the United States. It is scheduled to arrive in March and should be deployed by November this year.

The department added that the decommissioning of Station 23461 buoy will not make the department’s National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC) less effective.

This is because the NDWC system also used information from other sources, both inside and outside Thailand to compile and simulate tsunami scenarios as a warning for people along Thai coastal provinces in time.

The department said the system used information from foreign partners in monitoring earthquakes in the Indian Ocean and other seas as well as data from tsunami buoys in the Indian Sea and water level measuring stations of India and Indonesia.

Data from water level measuring stations at Koh Mang in Phang Nga and Koh Racha Noi in Phuket are also taken for compiling.

The information will be comprehensive enough to issue a tsunami warning for Satun, Trang, Krabi, Phang Nga, Ranong and Phuket in time, the department assured.

Without a tsunami warning system, thousands of lives were lost when a tsunami hit the western and southern coastlines, particularly affecting popular tourist destinations like Phuket, Khao Lak, and Phi Phi Island. The waves reached up to 10 meters high in some areas, causing immense damage to infrastructure on December 26, 2004.

  4. Thailand‘s Industry Ministry, under the dynamic leadership of Minister Pimpattra Wichaikul, is set to revolutionise the nation into an ASEAN Halal hub.

The minister is gearing up for a high-stakes meeting with Saudi Arabian officials, the powerhouse behind the world’s colossal halal markets.

Scheduled to confer with the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), Pimpattra is on a mission to fortify consumer trust in halal products across Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, stated Aditad Vasinonta, the director-general of the Department of Primary Industries and Mines.

Earlier this week, the industry minister made waves by unveiling the ministry’s ambitious blueprint – the establishment of a dedicated halal department, poised to catapult the industry’s growth in Thailand’s Deep South. The grand vision extends further with the government’s pursuit of uplifting lives through a groundbreaking Halal Economic Corridor, spanning key provinces and districts, including Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Satun, and Songkhla’s Na Thawi, Saba Yoi, Chana, and Thepa.

Pimpattra, a staunch advocate for transformative change, envisions the halal department as a catalyst for diversifying halal offerings. The department is set to pave the way for innovative halal products and services, encompassing not only new culinary delights for the Muslim community but also venturing into the realms of halal fashion and tourism.

Proponents anticipate that the surge in halal-related businesses will propel the industrial sector’s GDP by a staggering 1.2% within three years, according to the Ministry of Industry.

Industry insiders are bullish on the global halal market, predicting a meteoric rise to a staggering US$2.32 trillion (approximately 8.04 trillion baht) in 2024, up from US$2.1 trillion last year. Notably, Thailand’s export of halal food, valued at 213 billion baht in 2022, secured a 2.7% share in the world market, with a substantial 78% representing natural halal food and the remaining portion requiring halal certification, reported Bangkok Post.

As Industry Minister Pimpattra embarks on her crucial meeting with SASO officials, it is poised to be a game-changer for Thailand’s foray into the lucrative halal market. The undisclosed discussions in Riyadh will unfold as part of her participation in the Future Minerals Forum, a prestigious international ministerial gathering from January 9 to 11, emphasising the critical role of minerals in clean energy development.

  6. Cabinet approves lower excise taxes for liquor, nightclub services

    By Pattaya Mail

    January 4, 2024

Lawan Sangsanit, Permanent Secretary of Finance, said these proposals give priority to community-based tourism, improve the quality of local produce, and position tourism-related services as key drivers for the national economy.

The Cabinet has approved a set of proposals to reduce excise taxes for liquor and entertainment venues, in an effort to boost national revenue through tourism.

The proposals, which aim to position Thailand as a tourism hub and encourage spending by tourists, will cut the excise tax imposed on wine from 10% to 5%, and the alcohol duty down from 1,500 baht per liter to 1,000 baht per liter. As for locally-made liquor, the excise tax will be waived but the alcohol duty for liquor with 7% alcohol volume will remain unchanged.

Lawan Sangsanit, Permanent Secretary of Finance, said these proposals give priority to community-based tourism, improve the quality of local produce, and position tourism-related services as key drivers for the national economy.

He said these new measures are expected to increase tourist spending on alcoholic drinks by 3%, and raise tourist-generated revenue by 2.9 billion baht, with an average spending per person increased to 43,400 baht.

The Thai government has also introduced a temporary excise tax reduction from 10% down to 5% for entertainment venues which include nightclubs, pubs, and bars. This lowered rate will remain applicable until 31 December 2024. (NNT) LINK

  12. Thais are being warned of job scams in Cambodia that could lead to them being forced into call-centre servitude.

The Thai embassy in Phanom Penh advised Thais to think again if they are invited to work in highly-paid jobs in Cambodia, as many victims have ended up working for call-centre gangs.

In a warning issued on Wednesday, the embassy said that last year many Thais were lured to work for call centre gangs in Cambodia. Some of the victims have been sentenced to 50 years in jail and ordered to repay the money to their victims.

Thais who wish to work in Cambodia should carefully check the information about the companies that they are considering applying to or working for, the embassy warned.

It added that if jobseekers were smuggled into Cambodia by employers rather than through legal channels, they would definitely be forced to work for illegal gangs.

“To work in a foreign country, Thais should leave the kingdom and enter the destination country legally and should seek a work permit from the host country,” the embassy stated.
