  1. Jeeze that's a worry. My current cheap options are Auckland- random destination in China for 11 hour stop over - Vientiane.

Someone I know did this route recently and on the way there it wasn't so bad, but the return to NZ was, many excitable Chinese folk shouting at each other up and down the plane, for the whole trip.

  2. because - Trump....

Suit yourself: Trump offers scraps of his indictment outfit for $4,699.53 a pop:

new hustle: selling little cut-out pieces of a suit he wore during one of his arrests.

“It was a great suit, believe me, a really good suit. It’s all cut up, and you’re gonna get a piece of it,” Trump said in a video announcing the sale.

Trump wore a blue suit when he was arrested and had his mugshot taken at an Atlanta jail in August. The former Apprentice host has already monetized the mugshot: on his campaign website, people can buy coffee mugs, T-shirts and Christmas stockings bearing the image.

The move into fabric sales is a new one, however.

To buy a piece of the suit, people first have to buy 47 “digital trading cards”, each featuring an illustration of Trump, through the Collect Trump Cards website. Buyers will then receive a bit of the suit, or tie, that Trump wore when he was arrested – on charges related to his attempts to overturn the election – at Fulton county jail in August 2023...

Senator Upakit Pachariyangkun is facing charges after public prosecutors filed a law suit against him today, December 14.

The Thai politician has been accused of money laundering and aiding a transnational criminal organisation. This legal action follows the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) decision to indict Upakit on charges of money laundering, involvement in a transnational criminal organisation, and alleged support or collusion in an illicit drug network.

Upakit was linked with Myanmar national, Tun Min Latt, who was apprehended for drug trafficking and money laundering in September of the previous year. The senator arrived at the Criminal Court today, accompanied by his lawyer, and wearing a face mask and sunglasses for the hearing.

OAG spokesperson, Prayut Phetkhun, revealed that the suit filed against Upakit includes six offences. These encompass illicit drug collusion, unlawful possession of Category 2 drugs(ketamine), money laundering, involvement in a transnational crime organisation, and related offences. Upakit, however, has denied all charges...

  5. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 07, 2023

Thai police have threatened to take legal action against a Chinese social media idol for saying a Bangkok district famous for its night life is not safe, although they admitted they did not know yet how they would proceed against the woman.

Pol Maj-General Phanthana Nutchanart, deputy commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, said police now know the whereabouts of the Chinese woman who posted a negative clip about Soi Nana on Sukhumvit Road.

Phanthana, however, admitted that the Chinese tourist had the right to post a clip criticising Thailand. Police had yet to consider the legal aspects of taking action against her.

Phanthana said police would summon the tourist for interrogation to know about her motive.

He was commenting on a post on Facebook page, Lui Chin (Fighting Chinese). On Wednesday, the page posted that a Chinese TikTok user, who is a star on Douyin, a Chinese social network, had posted a clip discrediting Thailand by saying it was unsafe for women to travel alone on Soi Nana.

The FB page Lui Chin added the Chinese tourist had mentioned in her video clip that 99% of people on Soi Nana “are not good”.

On Thursday, Lumpini Police Station sent a report on the case to the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

In the report, the station identified the Chinese woman as Ziyu Wang, 28, who entered Thailand via the Suvarnabhumi checkpoint on November 2. Her visa expires in October next year.

The report quoted the Chinese woman as speaking on her video clip that she would risk herself to warn women about what would happen if they visited the soi alone.

According to the report, the tourist visited the soi at 11.30pm one night and waited there for several minutes for strangers to greet her.

After a foreign tourist greeted her, she walked away and said on camera that she could have been helplessly pulled away by the foreigner.

“A moment ago that man said to me: ‘How are you today?’ But I could say had he pulled me away, I would not have been able to escape. You, women, if you are here and if you are approached, I can guarantee you won’t be able to escape.”

According to the report by the police station, the woman ended her clip by saying: “99% of people walking on this street are definitely not good people.”

The clip was another instance of negative publicity undermining Thailand’s soft power, according to tourism operators in the country. They complain that the government’s free visa measure did not help much in bringing Chinese tourists because social networks in China were flooded with false news and negative news about the kingdom.

It is worth noting that "the Chinese woman as Ziyu Wang, 28, who entered Thailand via the Suvarnabhumi checkpoint on November 2. Her visa expires in October next year."

We cannot be sure whether the posting of the video was indeed on this most recent Wednesday, or some other Wednesday.

  6. By Khaosod English - December 3, 2023 9:38 pm

And yet it's on the main page, of Khaosod English today, which is 8 December in NZ.

    ___________

NONG BUA LAMPHU – High-ranking Thai officials, including the Prime Minister, ordered an investigation into a German media documentary that claimed one of two foreign suspects involved in child prostitution paid a 1 million baht bribe and escaped.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Sunday, December 3, during his visit to Nong Bua Lamphu Province that he discussed and gave orders to the Ministry of Justice and the Royal Thai Police to carefully look at this matter.

“The incident mentioned in the documentary happened last year. But no matter when it happens, we have to fix it. Because it is our duty. As I said, tourism promotion policy is a big issue. We solved these problems together,” said the PM.

Deutsche Welle (DW) published a documentary titled “Sex Tourism in Thailand,” which showed the film team came across evidence of paedophilia crimes, even though the officials said there is no longer any prostitution of minors in the red-light district of Pattaya.

The documentary also mentioned a German national who is still able to leave the country shortly after his arrest under scandalous circumstances in 2022. This man told an interview in Frankfurt, Germany, that he had paid a one million baht bribe to leave Thailand for Germany.

According to Pol. Gen. Surachet Hakphan, deputy national police chief, two foreign suspects bought the services of juveniles under the age of 18. One is British, while the other is German. They were later arrested. He also directed that the probe be expanded by the Pattaya Police Station.

It was later revealed that the foreign males had already been granted bail by the court. Meanwhile, the Immigration Bureau has banned these two individuals since they are not permitted to leave the country. However, when the German guy asked the court for permission to leave the country, the court granted his request.

Pol. Gen. Surachet further stated in Nong Bua Lamphu that he is presently reviewing whether or not the Pattaya Police Station investigators follow the regulations, recognising that this is a serious concern. On December 5, he will hold a press conference.

Furthermore, in the instance of police officers accused of accepting bribes, Pol. Gen. Surachet stated that he has directed a team to do a thorough investigation, including the money pathway. If a crime is discovered, it must be prosecuted.

    ___________

So, for clarity a German man says he paid a bribe in or about 2022. Clearly this is not breaking news.

But the Prime Minister gave orders on 3 December this year, these are what's being reported on and presumably, are being actioned in recent and forthcoming days.

So if any of our half cognisant members, want have a whinge, about the validity of this being a news story, or other, do it, get it out of your system.

  7. Want to do something different during this New Year’s break? You can now ring in 2024 at a camping site under the stars thanks to the Department of Highways’ newest initiative.

Sarawut Songwilai, the department’s director general, said the department is making 31 plots of land available for camping as part of the Transport Ministry’s plan to boost tourism.

These 31 locations will be open to holidaymakers from December 29 to January 4. (so only then?)

Sarawut said the camping sites, managed by the Department of Highways, come with complimentary drinking water and toilet facilities. Dedicated officials will also be on standby round the clock to help campers. What’s even better is that no fees will be collected.

Those eager to secure their spot can call the department’s 1586 hotline at any time of the day or night. The sites are located across the country, with 21 in the North, five in the Northeast, three in the West and two in the Central region.

...John Roese, Dell Technologies’ Global Chief Technology Officer, shared this vision during an online roundtable discussion titled Visions: 2024 and Beyond.

“In 2024, we will see an AI era in which generative AI dialogue will move from theory to practice.”

He further explained that the transition will involve shifting from building training infrastructure towards inference infrastructure.

Inference is the utilisation of trained AI models to derive predictions, make decisions or generate outputs based on input data. By 2024, AI will have evolved from a theoretical concept to a practical tool, Roese predicts. One of the major concerns will be security, especially with the potential risk of data-trained model theft.

“Developing the security architecture around inference infrastructure will be a critical task next year.”...

  11. Authorities in Chonburi Province successfully dismantled a fake monk gang operating in the picturesque Sriracha mountains. The gang was accused of deceiving villagers and collecting funds by posing as representatives of a specific temple for religious purposes.

The operation was initiated following complaints from local residents about the establishment of a counterfeit monastery in the region. Undercover immigration officers closely monitored the suspicious activities of the individuals involved and gathered crucial information before charging the suspects.

The investigative team executed a raid on November 30 and apprehended four Cambodian nationals dressed as monks. The first suspect was arrested in the Suphalerk market in Surasak Sub-district, Sriracha District, who led the officers up to the hideaway on the hill where three more were found...
