  1. On November 16th, 2023, Pol. Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the commissioner general of the Royal Thai Police, publicly revealed the expungement of more than 9.3 million out of 13 million convictions within 2 years.

    Thai reporters mentioned Ex-Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, currently undergoing treatment in the Police General Hospital, and whether he is in the criteria for expungement or not. Pol. Gen. Torsak answered to Thai reporters that Thaksin is not in the criteria as he committed felony crimes with a sentence of more than 1 year...

  2. Despite the government’s efforts to take strict measures to control gun violence following the shooting of a 17-year-old at Paragon in October, there have been at least two other incidents in Bangkok recently.

    The first incident occurred on Saturday, November 11, when a group of teenagers were involved in a shootout in which Maria Sirada Sinprasert, also known as “Teacher Jeab” who teaches computer skills at Sacred Heart Convent School, was accidentally shot. She was shot in front of TMB Thanachart Bank, Khlong Toey Branch, Sunthorn Kesa Road. She later died in hospital.

    A group of parents and students of Sacred Heart Convent School laid flowers to mourn the loss of “Teacher Jeab” Maria Sirada Sinpraserton on November 13, in front of TMB Thanachart Bank, Khlong Toey Branch.

    On Monday morning, November 13, there was another incident when two groups of teenagers exchanged gunfire and explosives. A 15-year-old 5th grade student was killed in the crossfire near the entrance to Soi Phatthanakan 53, which runs parallel to the Bangkok-Chonburi motorway in Suan Luang district. 

    Anutin Charnvirakul, the Interior Minister, spoke out in favour of banning all Thai citizens from carrying weapons.

    “We cannot allow people to carry guns because if students and teachers are shot like this, can society bear it? It’s not just about vocational students, it’s about everyone,” said Anutin. 

    A 15-year-old 5th grade student was killed in the crossfire near the entrance to Soi Phatthanakan 53.

    Anutin also addressed the problem that there are more than 10 million legally owned firearms in Thailand. He explained that instead of allowing individuals to carry guns for self-defence, it is crucial to strengthen trust in the law and the state to ensure public safety.   3. And for more commentary if anyone is interested, in the state of politics in NZ, we had an election recently with three parties now  in negotiations to form the next government under our M.M.P. system.

    It's been over a month and still no progress, soon they'll be running out of term, to govern in.

    Stick, as extreme, as some of us, find the sentiment, you refer to, we're all adults here and appreciate robust discussion.

    A friendly warning though: suggesting that a world figure be shot, could lead,  with the wonders of the internet and Ai, to you finding, yourself, or being already, on a list somewhere.

    It maybe that you are prepared for such and think that, disruptions to your travel plans and increased attention from authorities is worth it.

    This is why, we are careful about what we  post on the royals.

    If you think I'm being alarmist, try a search on the phrase you stand by.

    And then reflect on the huge resources, of organisations like Five Eyes whose information is not typically included in public Google search results.

    In my case 25, was 40 years ago and I did the wife and kids thing twice, so I could "not learn from my mistakes" and get married a third time.

  7. The Cambodian government has been accused of using "direct and subtle threats" to evict thousands of families living near the Angkor Wat Unesco World Heritage Site.

    The report by human rights group Amnesty International concluded international law had been breached.

    A government spokesperson said that was "not right" and insisted the relocations were voluntary.

    Families are being moved to a new community 15 miles (25km) away.

    Cambodian authorities claim squatters are setting up informal settlements which damage the environment.

    Government spokesman Pen Bona said the relocation of 10,000 families was in line with rules set down by the United Nations' heritage body Unesco, which banned structures or people living on the site.

    However Unesco said it "never requested, nor supported, nor was a party to this programme" and has asked the authorities to take "corrective measures" in response to the report...

This time they want the individuals behind a few AI-generated photos of naughty monks playing rock music, drinking alcohol, smoking and singing with beautiful ladies at a karaoke bar, and racing motorcycles literally behind bars – citing the Computer Crime Act.

    Basically, the cybercrime act makes importing false information into a computer system a crime punishable by a maximum imprisonment term of five years. The National Office of Buddhism said earlier this week that these viral AI-generated images are degrading Buddhism in Thailand.

    Like chasing “maya” (illusion) or a phantom, they will fail as even if the person behind the viral images is in prison, anyone outside the jurisdiction of Thai laws could simply come up with a new version of “naughty Thai monks.” What is more, perhaps they have never heard of this thing called “Streisand effect,” so they end up spreading the awareness about these otherwise harmless images by making sure it becomes news and more people end up becoming curious and wanting to see it.

    PM Office Minister Puangpetch Chun-la-iad was more tactful when on Wednesday, she urged the public not to share these images. But then that was after many more Thais and foreigners read the news and became intrigued by the overt sensitivity of these people who supposedly vowed to defend Buddhism.....

    BANGKOK – The Thailand Film Office, the official government organization in charge of promoting Thai film, gave a belated and half-hearted congratulations today to director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, who won Thailand’s first-ever Palm d’Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival last month for Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives).

    Film board director Wanasiri Morakul, whose tenure has seen virtually no support for alternative film directors such as Apichatpong, issued a short and unenthusiastic statement that congratulated him for “bringing honor and fame to the Kingdom of Thailand.” The vaguely-worded statement went on to sort-of acknowledge Apichatpong’s “artistic contributions to the rich cultural traditions of the Siamese people.”

    Apichatpong, who has publicly criticized the film board for censoring his previous films, acknowledged the insincere, hollow congratulations by further criticizing the state of Thai film, specifically the recent decision by the Ministry of Culture to spend half its film promotion budget on a single blockbuster film, King Naresuan, directed by a royally-connected member of the cultural elite. 

    “There are clear conflicts of interest among those deciding who should receive the funds,” Mr Apichatpong said. “Oh, and thanks to the Film Board for – actually, fuck the Film Board. They’re worthless, spineless bureaucrats who wouldn’t know a good movie from a hole in the ground.” 

    The film board, infamous in the film industry for supporting draconian censorship laws that restrict artistic freedom, also made addition statements encouraging the world to take another look at Thai film. 

    “Thailand has a rich film history that should not be overlooked,” said Wanasiri Morakul. “Specifically, we hope that Apichatpong’s award will bring new audiences to truly great Thai films such as The Legend of Suriyothai.”

    Wanasiri also encouraged movie lovers to rent a copy of Where the Miracle Happens, the film written by and acted in by Princess Ubolrat, “which also played at Cannes,” she added, referring to the Thai government’s decision to privately fund a run at a Cannes cinema when the film failed to be selected as an official entry. 

    When asked which of Apichatpong’s films was her favorite, she admitted she had not yet seen any.

I'm not so much worried about the British,  mostly benign - I reckon it was Queen Vic and her rellies that caused a lot of the historically recent strife, King George V and Tsar Nicholas II and Kaiser Wilhelm II, couldn't get their acts together and ultimately were responsible for WW 1  - Queen Vic's lot.

  14. I was just reading something now relating to Trump. I'm posting the below missive, as the Gaza mess is a stew and the Israelis and Hamas are the chillies in the Meat and Beans.

    But!        

    This post, is to further the flavours, you kind gentlemen are discussing, and comes with some commentary, that I picked up on, listening to a podcast (Rachel Maddow - Déjà News).

    and so, briefly - ish:

    Back in the day, after WW1 after the League of Nations was formed, to "group hug" and protect each other, Mussolini was hell bent on invading and taking Ethiopia.

    Despite a long and strident international campaign by the Emperor Haile Selassie, the putative leaders of the League of Nations decided to do nothing, as they thought that any attempt to stop Mussolini would push the world into WW2.

    History shows, that WW2 happened anyway. In part, because a loose coalition, of  "Strong" men like Mussolini, Stalin and notably Hitler, thought they could get away, with anything, because the League of Nations had failed to protect Ethiopia.

    Fast forward to Putin. Recently he took Crimea. The U.N. failed to do anything of substance. Then he took the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine, the U.N. ditto, nothing of substance. Then he launched on the Ukraine as a whole. The Western world is supporting the Ukraine, but without any direct action, like U.S. bombers hitting Russians.

    So at least, the West is trying.

    Now the Hamas have slaughtered some Israeli folk, including large numbers of children and women - also hostages taken, to be dangled on hooks.

    The West, but primarily the U.S.A. is in there, mainly in unflinching support, of the Grinning Chimp Netanyahu.

    This has, in my opinion, raised the heat on the Middle East cauldron, to boiling over. If the heat is not lowered it will get a lot worse, with Iran in the wings and the rest of the place, all girding their robes, to ride into battle and sort out their historical and tribal grievances.

    Once again, as if in a parallel with Ethiopia from the '30s, we have "Strong" men pushing the limits.

    Unknown, at least to me, is where China will move in all of this.

    Also, though I am comfortable that the U.S.A. is going to remain the stable and liberal representative democracy we all know, they've had a close call.

    Trump was the front man, but the Hyenas were the GOP, who have a history, of close ties to Germany's Nazi movement in build up and execution of WW2. So much so, that some senators were then using the free U.S. government mail, they had access to, to mail out Nazi propaganda leaflets. Ref podcast (Rachel Maddow - Ultra).

    I think it is probably human nature, that when someone has the opportunity, to make themselves King of the Universe, at any cost, they will take that opportunity.

    Fortunately the masses, always have more masses, and can remove, the cancers that arise, from time to time.

    “The real threat is not from the radical right, the real threat is from the radical left, and it’s growing every day, every single day. The threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous, and grave than the threat from within. Our threat is from within.”

    This is straight-up Nazi talk, in a way he’s never done quite before. To announce that the real enemy is domestic and then to speak of that enemy in subhuman terms is Fascism 101. Especially that particular word...
