We expect the army to honour its commitment to make this a temporary action to prevent violence, and to not undermine democratic institutions," said US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki. Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha declared martial law early Tuesday in a bid to stem violence in the country, which has been wracked for the past six months by anti-government protests. "This development underscores the need for elections to determine the will of the Thai people," said the State Department. The US is concerned about the political crisis in Thailand and urges "all parties to respect democratic principles, including respect for freedom of speech," Psaki said. "We understand the Royal Thai Army announced that this martial law declaration is not a coup. We expect the Army to honor its commitment to make this a temporary action to prevent violence, and to not undermine democratic institutions," Psaki said. "The United States firmly believes all parties must work together to resolve differences through dialogue and find a way forward. This development underscores the need for elections to determine the will of the Thai people," she added.

Under the "second announcement" of the martial law order, which is not a coup, Gen Prayuth, the army chief, declared himself director of the PKCC. The PKCC declared it has taken control of all security operations, nationwide - the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc), Royal Thai Police Office, army, navy, air force, Interior Ministry and relevant government agencies The centre has almost identical duties to the Capo. It is "to be responsible for taking action to prevent and mitigate any situation which may affect peace and order and security" throughout the country, according to the accouncement. The PKCC "is empowered to enforce all sections under the Martial Law Act" to try to quickly restore peace to the country. It is also empowered to "invite individuals to report to authorities" (detain) to testify or hand over documents and other evidence for use in peace-keeping operations. Also under the order, the Capo was ordered to cease all operations, effective immediately. All personnel, except those of the three armed forces, are to return to their original units.

  7. Military commanders in troubled areas have the authority to enforce martial law, if it looks like war or riots may break out. Martial law gives military officers the power to: - Take action against war or riots; - Use arms to suppress unrest; - Search, confiscate or occupy any premises or vehicles; - Censor information; - Block, search and control postal services; - Activate the military court to judge on crimes within the area under martial law; - Mobilise civilians to help the military; - Procure resources such as vehicles or logistical materials to support military operations; - Prohibit public gatherings, publications, broadcasting, transport, communication, travel, the movement of people or any action that the Defence Ministry deems necessary; - Enforce curfews; - Destroy, remove or adjust any premise or location for the purpose of military operations; - Arrest and detain suspects for a maximum of seven days. - People are not entitled to any compensation for damage incurred during such military operations; - Martial law can only be ended with a Royal Decree. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/politics/What-the-martial-law-entails-30234049.html

Thai government not consulted about martial law: PM's aide BANGKOK, May 20, 2014 (AFP) - Thailand's embattled government was not consulted in advance by the military about the declaration of martial law but it is still in power, said the chief security adviser to Prime Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan. 12. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Many-senior-Lao-officials-killed-in-plane-crash-30233910.html Many senior government officials, including Deputy PM and Defence Minister Douangchay Phichit, were killed when their plane crashed in Xieng Khouang province in the north of Laos early yesterday. They were flying to attend a commemoration ceremony. Also killed in the crash were Minister of Public Security Thongbanh Seng-aphone, the Communist Party's propaganda chief Cheuang Sombounkhanh and Vientiane Mayor Soukanh Mahalath. The Lao Air Force plane, a Russian AN 74TK300, left the capital Vientiane yesterday morning with senior military officers and other government officials. They were heading to Xieng Khouang to attend a ceremony marking the opening of the Lao Army's 2nd Division in the province. There were about 20 people on board, including state officials and members of the crew. The flight crashed in Nadee village in Xieng Khouang's Peak district at 7am - a kilometre or so from the airport it was heading to, Lao News Agency said, adding that the cause of the crash was being investigated. Douangchay's wife Thanda Phichit and some of his close aides also died in the accident, though three people, including a flight attendant, reportedly survived, sources in Vientiane said. Douangchay, 69, was regarded as the second generation of Lao leaders and is believed to have climbed the political ladder quickly following the footsteps of President Choummaly Sayasone. He entered the Politburo, the inner circle of the ruling party, and took the helm of Defence in 2001. Thailand's Defence Ministry's permanent-secretary Niphat Thonglek yesterday expressed his condolences, saying he had known the late minister for more than 15 years. Niphat said he was scheduled to meet Doungchay on Monday during an Asean Defence Ministers' meeting in Myanmar. "I will pay my respects and attend his funeral in Laos," he said. The late Minister of Public Security Thongbanh and Vientiane Mayor Soukanh were also key people in the Lao political leadership, while propaganda chief Cheuang was seen as a rising star in the ruling party. Mountainous Xieng Khouang province in the North of Laos is a risky area for aviation due to its terrain and weather conditions. The drama follows a plane crash in last October, when a Laos Airlines ATR72 crashed into the Mekong River in Pakse, killing all 44 people on board.

Dozens of police surrounded a condominium in Silom where Satish was staying demanding him to turn himself in to them. But shortly after the encirclement of the condominium reached the People’s Democratic Reform Committee’s protest stage at the UN Building, a core leader Sathit Wongnontoei then sent message on Blue Sky Channel asking all PDRC supporters to show up in full force to intercept the arrest. Within less than half an hour, supporters came out with their vehicles to block the police vehicles and after a brief negotiation, the police agreed to pull out. Satish Segal is one of anti-government rally leaders who were issued arrest warrant on insurrection charge. A police was quoted as saying that Satish should surrender or face deportation. Criminal Court on Wednesday approved arrest warrants requested by Department of Special Investigation on 30 core leaders of People’s Democratic Reform Committee, including Satish. Satish, a former chairman of Thai-Indian Chamber of Commerce, was criticized of being a leader of PDRC after he appeared on rally stage. However he denied the charges. He faced deportation if charged.
  14. http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/udd-hits-back-general-prayuth-chan-ocha/ United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship chairman Jatuporn Promphan hit back at Army Commander-in-Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha’s seven-point statement issued on Thursday. He said that the military had no responsibility whatsoever to resolve the political conflict but to defend the country and that the role to resolve the conflict rests with the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order. In response to the army chief’s warning the use of war weapons against the protesters by unidentified elements, Jatuporn said he wondered whether the army chief was preparing to impose martial law. He went on to ask whether General Prayuth wanted to convey a message the army might stage a coup when the latter said that the army would deploy full force to deal with the violence. Jatuporn asked why the military just sat idly by and did not issue any condemnation statement afterward when anti-government protesters tried to break into the conference room of the Royal Thai Air Force where a meeting was going on between the government and the Election Commission on Thursday.

  16. Actually Cav, immigration is usually always at movie and commercial sets to make sure none of the farangs get hassled over it as movies and commercials are a big earner for Thai companies! Talking a 1 billion dollar plus industry annually. I guess no one realized this effect yet.
  17. Well all of the other issues aside. This will totally kill the movie and commercial industry. Foreign companies come here because of the availability of people of every ethnic background. Most of these people are ..... borderrunners. I guess many will have to leave now. If you have a job and a valid visa, most people will not work in the movies or commercials as it pays just a little above their daily income in their normal jobs. But it usually gets them in trouble with the companies they work for if they try to get a day off. W

Central Embassy, which opened last week, falls firmly under the category of fancy with more than 200 internationally renowned names such as Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Gucci, Hermes, Miu Miu, Prada and Ralph Lauren. The Mall Group -- a rival to Central Group-- plans to invest THB20 billion into its ‘’Bangkok Mall’’ project. The Mall Group owns Siam Paragon and The Emporium, but now they plan to build a mall three times the size of Siam Paragon on 160,000 square meters of land at Bangna intersection. It will be the biggest mall in Thailand. Under the concept "City within the City," Bangkok Mall will be the biggest investment from The Mall Group. The building will have a water park, theme park, condominiums and offices for rent.

  22. http://bangkok.coconuts.co/2014/05/10/long-walk-don-mueang-tourists-stranded-pdrc-tollway-blockage Photos of tourists walking down the Don Muang Tollway shared throughout social media today have sparked online debate as to whether the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) has crossed the line of civility. The PDRC protesters have blocked inbound and outbound traffic on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and the Don Mueang Tollway in the areas surrounding the Police Club - where the government's Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (Capo) headquarters are located - and their Chaeng Wattana protest base. According to MThai, the traffic closure forced many tourists to give up their taxis and walk down the tollway all the way to Don Mueang Airport in the mid-day stifling heat. Concerned netizens said the incident will have a negative impact on Thailand's tourism industry. They also reasoned that the PDRC's rights to protest is compromising the rights of others. Traffic police have currently advised drivers to avoid Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and use Phaholyothin Road instead.
