Sukhumvit
Beijing is fairly easy to negotiate. Taxis plentiful as is public transport. Cheap too. There's a tube/underground system for peanuts although it's fairly limited in the ground it covers. Lots of things to do around the bar street area i.e. Sanlitun and Sanlitun Nan. Heaps of bars at expensive prices for beer, lots of Chinese yuppies, Filipino bands and crazy Westerners. Some reasonable restaurants too. Not too far from other tourist hotspots such as the Sheraton, Hard Rock etc. Also close to expat hooker pick up places like the Den and Maggie's. As others have pointed out Mandarin skill is invaluable. Handy phrasebook is the Looney Planet's mandarin book. V useful oral course is the Pimsleur method. Not cheap!
