Guest
I guess we all know the meanings of most of the common thai nick names. But what about some of the more regular names? I will kick it off with a couple that i think i know: boys Somchai (with a flat tone at the end): Winner Somchai (with a rising tone at the end): allround good guy ie: the perfect man. Sombat: good fortune Somchat: handsome man Somgeat: respected man Girls Amonrat:Angels crystal Suansuda: Angel Sinuan: name of an old song (?) Am I on the right track with these? Redbaron
That's why I was reffered to as Somchat! I take it 'som' can mean man. I know it also means orange, probably different tones hey. What about.. Ae? Loognam? Dtim? Mali? Da? Decharat?

markle
Says Redbaron: What about.. Ae? Loognam? Dtim? Mali? Da? Decharat? This is mix of real and nick names. Ae has no meaning it just sounds nice. Loognam (also spelt Luk nam?) tadpole Dtim - can vary alot according to the tone but usualy has no meaning. Mali - jasmine Da - nick name again, might be a sortened version of proper name like Ladda Decharat - proper name - either the authority of the king or authority of the state. jasmine
Hi, "Som" as in Somchai does not mean "man", it means "deserving, adequate, having quality to be". "Somchai" means "deserving to be a man, good quality to be a man, the same as "Somying", = "Having quality to be a woman (good quality)". jasmine
[color:"red"]Amonrat:Angels crystal Are you sure that it is not "Amornrat"? My niece's formal name is "Amornrat" which means 3 precious stones. It also was a name of a fictional angel. Formal Thai names normally are drived from "Sanskrit" and some of them have several meanings. [color:"red"] Somchat: handsome man I don't know about that, it just means "deserving to be born as a man", do not see "handsome" any where besides your face Did you get all Thai provinces names interpretted yet? Cheers!
Guest
Hi Jasmine, yes it is Amornrat...i stand corrected. As for the province name i still have a very long way to go but i am wiser than i was a few weeks back.
