short-time
The first number indicates the magnification and the second the size of the objective lenses in millimeters (which relates to image brightness). Don?t assume that more is better; it?s hard to hold binoculars steady enough to really see anything if they are much more than about 8X. And larger objectives mean a lot more weight. Also, be aware that most of the binoculars you see for sale are junk? In the world of optics you get what you pay for. Leica and Zeiss are by far the finest and in a class by themselves, but be prepared for sticker shock should you go pricing them! Not sure about now, but Nikon used to make some decent quality binoculars that were a good value. Happy Birding ST
