DVDs: what % are reliable?

Murphy,

A mate of mine bought a expensive home DVD player and the bloody thing wont play any copied DVD,VCD etc.He ended up buying another cheap one to play his copies. Also he has problems playing rented DVD,s if they have had a hard life. His cheap DVD player has no problem playing anything he sticks in it.Sometimes it seams the more inteligent the player is,the more problems it has reading a disc.Maybe why they dont play as well on pc?

sky brow.

Says legover:

how much better would you rate DVD over CD?

I'll assume you meant "V"CD vs. DVD viewing experience ::

For me, I can't no longer watch VDCs as DVDs are fairly affortable, offer better resolution, and have more functionalities (caption, special features - especially director's commentaries, ability to stop the movie and return to exact spot and etc.). Watching any sort of fast moving action movies on VCD formats are nightmare as I end up watching a bunch of blurred rectangular boxes on the screen!!!

I'm not sure how long DVD-5 keeps. I had one go bad when I left in uncovered on the desk collecting dust & sunlight. They also are thinner. I'd pay the extra to get DVD-9 for titles that I may watch more than once.

Another positive note is that most gals I know do not have DVD players (many seem to have VCD players) so they can't borrow the movie and must come to Baan Jazz to watch :grinyes:

Hi!

The picture quality is poorer on a VCD but still good enough to match a SVHS if it is made from a digital master and you are viewing on an ordinary TV set. The sound however is a completely different thing. If you only have a TV there is not allthat much difference but you have a surround system the differnce is enourmous.

Your a 'girls come to appartment' argument is of course a very heavy one. :grinyes:

You may be technically correct about digital copy VCD vs. DVD quality, I dunno enough to say any 'mo.

I've bought Superman and Star War on VCD format at a "normal" store here in BKK and were not impressed with the action sequence.

Humm ... maybe stay home again tonight with a good movie

Here's my angle on DVDs.

The mainstream movies I have bought so far have all worked.

I generally buy around 50 porno DVD,s purely for resale back here in the UK and out of these, maybe 2 out of every 10 will not play on the DVD player but will on the CPU and viser versa.Probably 1 out of evry 20 will not play on anything or start to "stick".

The biggest amount of failures I have had concerns software as about half the discs I have bought read "no disc"when inserted into the drive, but can be loaded onto some friends computers which is interesting ::.

Out of about 25 CDs of software I've never had any problems at all. Although I could be tempting fate as I've got 4 games from my recent trip which I haven't installed yet.

DVD-9 is just a dual-layer DVD whereas DVD-5 is single layer. Take a close look at the center of a DVD-9 disc... it will look like two CDs that have been glued together, but DVD-5 looks like a regular CD. The only difference is that twice as much data can be fit onto a DVD-9 disc- most movies these days are too long to fit onto a DVD-5 disc. As for longevity, they both should be the same- should last a lifetime if kept well.

Some DVDs seem to have had faulty masters. I really wanted to see Insomnia but it took 4 copies before I found a good one- as all the others all wouldn't load.

Overall, my success rate with DVDs is probably about 80%- of the faulty ones, some of them have physical defects on the disc. A friend of mine is an engineer working for a company that makes the machines that makes CDs and DVDs so he can point out the cause of each defect and has taught me a lot about the media- most defects seem to be due to improper calibration of the machines or poor-quality substrates used. Other discs are just plain dirty and can be cleaned (always wipe from the inside out) whereas other discs I have bought have been heavily scratched up for some reason- like they were used a lot before they were sold to me. Hence it pays to check the underside of the discs to see if they are clean and free of defects- many of the defects look like streaks inside the shiny part of the disc that shouldn't be there.

Yeah I know what you mean about DVD viewing- "Have you seen (name of movie) yet? Oh you haven't? Let's go back to Baan Crash and watch it tonight!" ::

Cheers!
