Anyone following Thai series on TV

Hi Markle,

often a very good window into Thai attitudes to things

I would say a very good window into the thai upper class as they all seem to be driving around in Benz, having servants etc.

I am sure that these kinds of soaps have caused more than one Issarn Mum and Dad to send their daughter to work in "Phaak Taai".

Cheers

Agree with that. And those soaps seems to transmit a severly distorted view on Thai life. On the other hand that's very much the nature of soaps -- who wants to see dreadful every-day-go-to-work gloom?

Having said that, there are occsionally soaps (or at least episodes) cutting in into "normal life"....They're sometimes quite interesting. Not exactly the topics you'll find in the west, as for example a full running series about about a katoey working at the noodle stand & "her" dreams, love life and problems :) (Every episode of course ending with a short interview with the person casting the katoey explaining he is not gay in real life, only doing it for TV etc. The face issue rears its head...) :grinyes:

I see lots of Thai soaps everyday. :banghead:

Ah yes, but some of the meanest and dirtiest villians are generally the super-rich.

Still if you look past the simplistic characterizations the quality 'lakorn' do say some things about the role of women in society, social justice, class equality, etc

Yes, I am watching all of the soapies after 8pm with the gf (nothing else on the agenda here in Chumpon :)) , excellent sleeping pills btw.

GF was watching a strange story last night where the dead father plays hamoc as a ghost, well, according to the gf's explanations. I still wonder if she was serious believing in ghosts....

Hi,

Look like you're enjoying Chumphon.

Chumphon was actually one of the first places of work for me back in the early eighties.

Stayed that time for several months in the Pornsawan Hotel right on the beach. Don't know if this hotel is still there, but it used to be really nice, and at times for weeks me and my Thai collegue had the complete hotel to ourselves.

Not 1 single tourist ever came to Chumphon in those days (too far out, no airport, and Koh Tao had nothing to offer).

Dit meet a very interesting Egnlish lady though who was teaching in the school inside the hotel compound. Used to be a police woman. Perhaps she's still around.

Really did like Chumphon, nice islands in front of the beach.

However, completely dead after 9 PM.

Cheers
