More Expensive Wines

For anyone who is interested, I noticed a stack of Chateau Petrus at the "duty free" type shop attached to the casino at the Koh Kong border.

I'm afraid I didn't even note the price (high) or the vintages as I was in a hurry, and my fine wine days are over :(, but couldn't help remarking on how incongruous their presence was, in that country and amongst the Jack Daniels and Malibus.

A couple of caveats. I believe that there is a lot of "counterfeit" Petrus about, in fact so much so that the chateau makes minor changes in the labels every year to combat it (?).

Also, while the shop is nice and airconditioned, God knows where the wine has been and how it has been stored in the last ten or whatever years. Wouldn't be surprised if they switched off the air con every night :)

This has saved me from blowing money on the goodies in Foodland - bottles of Palmer, Margaux etc. that I remember seeing among the groceries on Soi 5. I think they even had DRC Burgundies at one point but in what kind of condition ?

Also noticed that foodland Soi 5 have a couple of bottles of Chateau Petrus in stock. Think they were around 300,000 baht a bottle!!

Must be barking mad to spend that sort of cash on a bottle of wine...

I would love to see some Merc driving local buy it and drop it on the floor in the carpark...

Once gave two vintage ports to my wife's parents (Japanese, but had enjoyed quality port before). A Dow 1963 and a Taylor's single quinta 1964. Of course they both needed decanting but as we left Japan before drinking them, I heard they used a coffee filter and added "other" substances to change the taste. I didn't ask what - the mind boggles.

After that, when visiting, we took champagne and regular off the shelf late bottled vintage port.
