Morlam and No Alcohol in 7-11 after midnight

Hi all,

It's been some time since last I had a chance to attend a morlam concert here in Bangkok, so earlier this evening I went to watch a nice concert featuring Siriporn at the market place near where On Nuch Road meets with Srinakarin Road, I don't know exactly what this marked is called.

I have never been a big fan of Siriporn since most of her morlam is of the slow and somewhat melodramatic style. I prefer the faster and lighter style.

But I must say that Overall it was a good concert and I actually laughed at the comedy shows between the songs, something that doesn't happen often. Usually I find them as boring as the soaps on TV.

After the concert finished, time to head home and I decided I wanted to buy a Heineken from 7-11 next to the market. But not possible, no sales after midnight they told me!. Ok I thought, maybe they got annoyed with all the drunks from the concert and decided to close alcohol sales for the night. Then I decided I could just walk around the corner and cross On Nuch to get to the Family Mart there, but no luck, same deal, no alcohol after midnight!.

Anyone with similar experiences? I hope this is not part of the early closing implementation.

Best regards,

Hi danish,

'Talat on nut' is the name I've heard spoken about this spot, but I of course don't know if that is the official name.

I know that there was recently a major robbery (or a break-in) in a nearby liquor store on Thanon Onnut. A bit far-fetched, I know...but... perhaps that's why they've decided to stop alcohol sale early in the neighbourhood!?

I saw two of her concerts in Dec,very professional outfit and my favourite show, better than Jintara or Nok Noi's. The minor singers and the clowns are good. One of the singers sounds a lot like Got. Siriporn sings mostly Luktung these days and I cannot think of any morlam song she has recorded since being with grammy, she always ends up with bi rak si dam of though. In the off season some of the dancers work in bars off sukhumvit.-peter

Hi Peter,

You are right, it's more luktung than morlam, just me calling it morlam :) And yes her troupe is very large and much more professional than eg. Jintara's, I think thats what made me enjoy the concert even she's not one of my favorites.

She did mention a couple of things during the concert, first, that Thai Channel 5 did a documentary on her, wanting to prove that she is actually a katoey ;) and second that she is fully booked this year except for 2 weeks or something.

The second one I will take with a grain of salt though.

Best regards,

Hi Straycat,

Sounds resonable :)

I know that there was recently a major robbery (or a break-in) in a nearby liquor store on Thanon Onnut.

Could be the explanation. The reason could also be that it's mainly a muslim market/community in that area. I have no idea if it's something new or it's been like that for some time in the area.

She has a very good heart by all accounts and is much respected for this reason as well as her music. She had a massive hit about three years ago with parin ya jai on her first grammy cd. At the time the guy who wrote it (forget his name) was relatively unknown and was paid 5000 baht for writting the song. After it became a hit siriporn was making a lot of money on the royalties, I was told 10% of sales. She decided to give the writer half of her royalty earnings. Somebody in the know told me this so I believe it. The writer was put under contract by grammy and now writes only for them.

Siriporn has only just turned 40, looks a bit older though I think.-peter

I am a fan of Siriporn, actually like the slower music betetr.

I'm arriving in BKK late on Friday 5, leaving again on Tuesday following.

Anyone here aware of any Siriporn concerts between Saturday March 6 and tuesday? I'd even stay another day if neded, or would be prepared to travel to anywhere in Issaan on my way to Vientiane that week, to see her in concert.

I know Peter would tell me to contact Grammy, but I arrive late Friday, and wouldn't be able to do that until Monday, so any other info is welcome.

Hi Ikkrang,

I drove by the same place yesterday (on nut/srinakarin 'Talad On Nut') and there was a big poster saying they will have a Jintara concert on the 11th (i think), but I guess you have already left by that time.

Will try to check around, but I don't know when Siriporn will perform again.

Anyone for a Jintara concert? .. I will check to confirm the date.

Btw: saw the feature on ch5 where they wanted to prove that Siriporn is actually a katoey, no real evidence, just loads of katoeys in the studio. Siriporn was interviewed and told that some of her concerts was canceled by the organizers because of the rumors.

Best regards,
